I love this piece. This is a custom medallion that I designed and beaded for our Chairman, Jamie Azure. It is full of symbolic meaning - We are from the Turtle Mountains, hence the turtle design. I also added in the 4 directions, the colors of the medicine wheel, but did them in maroon (instead of red) and gold (instead of yellow) to give a nod to the Belcourt school colors (our youth!). Green is the Chairman's favorite color, and it happens to be the color that represents the center, the 'here'. I made that center radiate outward with grey beads - to represent smoke and the Great Spirit that stays with our hearts throughout our lives.
Wars and Rumors of Wars, 1971. Award winning painting by Joan Hill (Muscogee/Cherokee). Seems pretty appropriate right now.
