“It’s been said that art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. Consistent with this, throughout history, art has been used to challenge our thinking when it comes to various social issues. In the case of this art exhibit, there is no doubt that it is intended to do just this, taking on the issue of gun violence in an emotionally jarring way. But, that is the whole point. After all, the subject of this exhibit is an emotionally jarring one. The mass shooting in Virginia Beach last week was the 150th mass shooting in 151 days. Horrific mass shootings take place in churches, in movie theaters, and at concerts. And in America today, firearms are the second leading cause of death for children and teens. So, if it takes a certain level of shock to get people’s attention, so be it. The future of our communities, our friends and families and, most importantly, our children depends on our somehow breaking through the wall of inaction when it comes to this national epidemic.” - RXR CEO & Chairman Scott Rechler, on the @whisbe Back to School Shopping exhibit @starrettlehigh open through June 23.
