I am not much of a Christmas person — for too many years, it was too full of heartache, and it’s a crummy time for so many. But for my daughter, and my partner who would start singing carols in July if she could, I’m trying to find and remember the ways to enjoy it. The lights are pretty, the food is good, as Tim Minchin says “I have all the usual objections...but I quite like the songs,” and being with fam/chosen fam is good — I’m so lucky at this time in my life to have these things. Every family centred holiday (and aren’t they all?) brings grief for my sons to the foreground, but it’s a kind of grace to go to something like #tcm19 today and be able to enjoy, to feel presence and not just absence. ❄️❄️❄️
“How To Help Your Kids Ask About My Robot Leg,” my latest post for CBC Parents, is up now! Link in bio #amputee #amputeelife #parenting #disability #makemotherhooddiverse #robotleg
Aaaaaaaaah, @grgritt and @nickshermanmusic — both moving, mighty, and magical! I don’t get to shows often these days, but Im so glad I was in the adoring crowd for this one. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
It’s here! What an honour to have an essay in this remarkable collection edited by carla bergman of @emmatalks . The 21 Feminist Essays for Rising Up from @touchwooded includes the likes of Vivek Shraya, Kinnie Starr, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson -- folks whose work I admire enormously and have admired for so long, I can't quite believe I'm in their company. I'm savouring the pages now, look for the book (or order it in!) at your favourite bookstore and library.
Happy birthday to me 🎂🐱🎈 . . Being 40/2019 was my year of no — saying no to as much as possible other than time with my daughter and little fam, finishing my book, recording the the EP, and going to work (but not taking on more! No!). The year before had been all yes, which was great fun and all over the map... Year of no, for the most part, was a success. It felt good to constantly check in with my priorities and re-focus each time, always a reminder of what I have, what I love, and what I want. I don’t know yet what 41 will be, the year of maybe?! But I’m looking forward to it ❤️
Today, she’s two. And she had such a great day with friends and fam and carrot cake and books and balloons and running and climbing and all the love in the world. My heart is so full and two years were so fast and days like today linger and shine. ❤️
My upcoming album has a round on it, “Waitlist Lullaby.” Originally, @jimbryson and I recorded it with my voice singing all three parts, but realized: of course it should be three different voices telling the story. This afternoon, @ansleysmusic and @mosaintj recorded the two other parts. I didn’t know how it would turn out — I asked them both because I love each of their voices so much, but we’ve never sung together — and the result is SO beautiful I can barely stand it. I’m so honoured to have these two on this album and can’t wait to share it!! Thanks to @jeepersa for recording in his sweet studio.
