Melkam Genna! Today is Ethiopian Christmas. Grab a hockey pole and a few friends and lets swat a ball around. Genna is a traditional field-hockey style sport that is played every year during Christmas. Legends vary, from one where upon hearing of the birth of Christ, local shepherds went nuts and decided to randomly play the game with their staffs. A less palatable one is that the three wise men ran across a non-believer who didn’t give much care about the birth, killed him, and played Genna with his head. Ehhh… Over time, the game was developed into a diplomatic endeavor, bringing together neighboring villages and towns in sporting fellowship and allowing people of different classes to interact at an even playing field. Check out the full video by @transworldsport on the ancient game and how it being developed and promoted as a national sport in Ethiopia today. Place your orders for Thanksgiving bulk catering online! Order by Sunday 11/19 and pick up Tuesday or Wednesday that week. Impress the ### out of your friends and family, Thursday 11/23. And spare a couple turkeys in the process. Go to bunnaethiopia.net/thanksgiving (link in bio) to place your order. Or, we will be OPEN on Thanksgiving Day from 6 to 11, after our staff and family holiday lunch. We love Thanksgiving. It is the most accessible American holiday for immigrants, because there is no religious or political undertone (or at least there doesn't have to be if you don't buy into the corporate embellishment behind it all). Instead all you do is get together, eat great food, watch tv, play games, and chilllll the F out!! Some of the best Thanksgivings are spent with Indians, Israelis, Dominicans, and of course, Habeshas. Back in 2013, a few months before we fully acquired the space at 1084 Flushing, we did our first semi-permanent events as Bunna Cafe by creating a special Ethiopian thanksgiving menu and inviting people to come celebrate vegan Ethiopian style. It was a hit, and many of the new dishes, such as Kosta, Duba Wot, and Butecha Selata, ended up on our permanent menu. This year we are planning a couple things for the great holiday. At last, we're selling the goods! Starting Thanksgiving we will be offering packaged Berbere, Koseret, and holiday gift boxes for sale, at the restaruant and online!! Details to come. Come one and all, let's huddle together and be grateful. ... through feeders & tributaries. No other country has a greater influence on the flow of the Nile than Ethiopia ... --- Just 200km north of Khartoum is an ancient and transformative site, the pyramid burial grounds of Nubian kings from 2500 years ago. To get there one drives on the two lane interstate highway for about 3 hours until you see a crop of sand dunes with pointy tops. One veers off into the flat desert for 1km until you reach a fence and small welcome center, where a lady asks for a 1 dollar donation to the pyramid preservation society, and perhaps your bottle of water because she hasn't had any all day. Then you are in... no security, no tour guides, just you, the desert, and relics of a rich African society, in their purest form. Meroë, or Albijrawiya as the area is known locally, was the capital of a large Kushitic kingdom situated between the Nile, Atbara, and Blue Nile rivers, that lasted for over 1000 years between 800BCE and 350CE. Spawning from the brief Kushitic dominance of Egypt in the 25th dynasty, the city grew as a hub after Kush was pushed out of Egypt and back to the homeland. Meroë flourished in the iron trade. Meroitic metalworkers were considered among the best in the world. This, and Nubian gold, provided a huge export economy in trade links with with India and China. The city, to put it subtly, was rich-a-f. Altogether the site of Meroë holds 200 pyramids in three complexes. Since the demise of Kush the site has been looted many times over. Also, in the 1830s an Italian explorer decided he'd just help himself and blow up the tops of the big pyramids to see if he could find secret treasure. So much for the art of preservation.... Nevertheless the Meroitic pyramids are a breathtaking ethereal place to visit -- free of a tourist industry, you won't be distracted by people trying to sell souvenirs or making the whole thing kitshy. Just a couple kids trying to get you to ride their camels, and that elder lady who could use a dollar for the site and a bottle of water for herself. #meroe #sudan #kush #nubia #history #historylesson #pyramids #desert #Sahara #NileRiver #travel #blackhistory photos: @ssaverance, w @ibibraheem

#SpikedSpices Finishing up our cocktail lineup are some originals: Tosign Toddy – the Ethiopian margarita, using thyme and ginger TOSIGN tea. Tosign is used as a herbal tonic in Ethiopia, so it seems natural to make a gentle cocktail out of it. Pushkin – An Ethiopian white Russian in honor of a slightly black one. Allegedly Alexander Pushkin’s great grandfather Abram Petrovich Gannibal was taken from his home in Eritrea as a child back in the 17thcentury and raised in the court of the Tsar, eventually becoming a prominent member of the court. While Gannibal’s origins have been disputed in recent times, Eritrea and Ethiopia still claim this ancestry for Pushkin and his legacy is visible in street names and statues in both countries. Anyway, great cocktail! With hand roasted Bunna and Suf, Ethiopian-style sunflower milk. Shai Correnti – our original cocktail. Ethiopia has long been known for Tej, honey wine, but its grape-based wines are a nascent but fast growing industry. Vineyards are popping up in the fertile Awash Valley, spurned by investment from abroad. Castel Winery on Lake Ziway supplies a line of delicious wines by growing blended grapes imported from Bordeaux, France … We carry their Acacia line of Medium Sweet wines in a Red, White, and Rose. The Medium Sweet Red has a fruity note with a mild sweetness and goes well with berbere. The Medium Sweet White has a peach aroma and mild sweetness. Medium Sweet Rose has notes of citrus and strawberries. Castel also makes the very popular Rift Valley Merlot, nicely spiced and slightly dry. All wines are $8 per glass and $32 for a bottle. … the Addis Ababa Light Rail now consists of two lines and 39 stations, carrying an average of over 100,000 passengers daily. That is only a drop in the bucket for the number of commuters in the city, and the lines have not operated without some controversy, but it is an optimistic beginning for many as the city works hard to develop its infrastructure. ---- From South Africa, we feature the @StellarOrganic line, a delicious line of vegan, fair trade, and organic wines from Namaqualand. The Pinotage is a dry yet fruity medium/full body red with an apple and citrus finish. The Shiraz has an aroma of ripe berries and red plum, also on the dry side. The Chardonnay is a white with hints of citrus and banana. And from Stellenbosch, we have a refreshing white Chenin Blanc by Man Vinters. Let's hop on the Booze train and see where we get. First stop: Ethiopian Beers! They are great and we got 'em. This is Tusker Lager. It is not Ethiopian. It is Kenyan. You might ask why would we start talking about Ethiopian beers by mentioning a Kenyan beer? The answer is, I dunno. Ok hush, ANNYWAY! Tusker is a bold, tasty lager, not bitter, not hoppy, slightly sweet, and like most East African beers, it is pale in color. Just $6! Like all of our Ethiopian or Not Quite Ethiopian But Bordering The Country Of Ethiopia beers. Moving right along... #Ethiopianbeers #Beer #Beerporn #Ethiopia #Habesha #Kenya #TuskerLager #beerlover #beeroclock #birra #everythingiseshi #bushwick #vegan #nycvegan
Ok now we're talkin!! Meta Premium Beer has one of the best stories of the bunch. It is brewed by Meta Abo Brewery, which sources its water from an ancient and holy spring called St. Abo, outside of Addis Ababa. The flavor is noticeably crisp, light, and refreshing. St. Giorgis Lager is top dog among Ethiopian beers. It is on the sweet side with a light pale complexion. St. Giorgis Amber is one of the few darker beers in Ethiopia. It is sweet with a deeper complexion than the lager and goes great as an after dinner dessert beer. Bedele Special is another crisp, pleasant lager with a bit higher alcohol content (5.5%). Plus it has a colobus monkey on the bottle. Enough said. Harar Beer is a favorite, not only because it is made in the ancient walled city of Harar, but because it is actually delicious. Citrusy overtones and light sweetness that finishes well. Last but not least... #Ethiopianbeers #Beer #Beerporn #Ethiopia #Habesha #Kenya #TuskerLager #beerlover #beeroclock #birra #everythingiseshi #bushwick #vegan #nycvegan
Hakim Stout, made by Harar, is more of an amber than a stout, but packs a nice chocolatey punch with a good alcohol content at 5.5%. Yo, throw in a well shot with any Ethiopian beer, what do you get?? Only one of the most poppin' Ethiopian performing artists of this decade! … next Monday 4/17 is the big one, the Boston Marathon. Last year, Ethiopians Atsede Baysa and Lemi Berhanu Hayle took the top place. This year the men’s and women’s sides are stacked once again with favorites from Kenya and Ethiopia; also a handful of US runners poised to possibly stage an upset or two. On a local level, Bronx-based Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba will look to repeat her 2014 win on the women’s side. Over 30,000 will participate from over 90 countries and from hundreds of communities around the world – from Brooklyn to Bekoji*. #runnersfuel #marathon #marathontraining #marathonmaniacs #marathonrunners #marathonfood #carbload #bostonmarathon #ethiopianfood #plantbased #vegan #nycvegan #whatveganseat #everythingiseshi * = more about Bekoji, Ethiopia in a later post.
You don’t have to park up in an Italian restaurant the night before a race. Get a group of friends and find that one Ethiopian restaurant in your town...The world’s top marathoners will tell you there’s a superfood boost behind Ethiopian cuisine: The spongy fermented flatbread at every meal, called injera, is made from teff, a high-powered grain rich in protein and iron. Interview with Bill Bradley, @mensfitnessmag, Nov 2014 Vegan Ethiopian food is one of the best ways to carb up before a run. Big heaps of veggies, healthy fats, and extra injera give the necessary nutrition and vitamins to get ready for the upcoming challenge. Injera is packed with low glycemic complex carbs and iron. By eating it with the combo dishes your body absorbs more injera than by eating it alone. In no time you are absolutely stuffed, but not bloated or immobilized. The proof of the food’s effectiveness is in the people -- many of our Ethiopian and Eritrean staff at Bunna are or have been marathon runners. This year if you are planning to run, try pre-gaming with Bunna Café. Thanks to @firstrun and local running crew @blackrosesnyc for their support. Good luck next week. We designed the wall behind our bar to follow the map of early Lalibela. Each rectangle represents one of the eleven churches, while the two shelves depict (n to s ) a tunnel from Bet Giorgis to the eastern church complex , and (s to n) the River Yordanos, named after the one in Jerusalem. The rectangles representing the churches is a common icon in Ethiopian art, and is represented in various places throughout the restaurant. Gebeta is said to be the original mancala-style board game. Evidence of gebeta boards have been found in artifacts from Classical-era Axum (more on the Axumite Empire later). #historylesson#ethiopia#lalibela#churches#history#wondersoftheworld#unesco#worldheritage#habesha#ethiopianhistory#abyssinia#axum#jebena#coffee

#SpicedBeverages -- Ethiopia has some of the most delicious spiced teas and coffees in the world. Our selection includes (served cold or hot): Tosign Shai – used as a medicinal drink in Ethiopia. Thyme, ginger, and lime. Caffeine free, delicious, and calming. Bunna – we all know about the coffee. Sidamo beans hand roasted in-house and brewed on our stage with cardamom and cloves. We take some of our batch and slowly cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate to make an intense iced brew. Shai Kimem (or just Shai) – Hand-picked Ethiopian highland black tea, brewed with cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and ginger. Served with a lime wedge. Prefer spiked spices? We will toddy any of these drinks. Gebre Mesqel Lalibela was a ruler of Ethiopia in the 1200s, part of the long-standing Zagwe Dynasty. He spent much of his childhood in Crusader-occupied Jerusalem, and when it was reconquered by the Muslims in 1187, he drew inspiration to build a replica of the city in the highlands of Ethiopia, and use it as his capital and the spiritual center of the country. In a feat of engineering unfathomable for its time, he oversaw the cutting of eleven large churches out of the soft limestone boulders of the area – all of them intricately and meticulously carved into perfect angles and proportions. The Lalibela complex likely took decades to finish, but became a powerful center of the Zagwe domain and a site of wonder for later European visitors, with one Portuguese ambassador in the 1500s writing: “I weary of writing more about these buildings, because it seems to me that I shall not be believed if I write more … I swear by God, in Whose power I am, that all I have written is the truth.” Two of the twelve churches stand out in particular. Medhane Alem, at over 100 feet in length and 33 feet in height, is considered to be the largest monolithic church in the world. The most recognizable and well-preserved is St Giorgis, which is carved out as a cross and sits alone at the far end of the complex. Today they are a popular tourist destination, and the second holiest site in the country behind the ancient city of Aksum. #historylesson#ethiopia#lalibela#churches#history#wondersoftheworld#unesco#worldheritage#habesha#ethiopianhistory#abyssinia#axum
The common base for many Ethiopian dishes, including Misir Wot and Yeter kik Alicha – is Onion, Garlic, and Ginger. You will find these flavors in most Ethiopian dishes and it is why they go well together in a shared plate. Koseret (Lippia Javanica) is a herb unique to Ethiopia. It is commonly used for spiced butter and as a condiment, and is also prevalent in our Gomen recipe. #spices#ethiopia#ethiopianfood#vegan#vegetarian#spicerack#instafood
Other spices that are common in Ethiopian food and beverages are: Cardamom – found in many teas, coffee, and is a key ingredient in Berbere and many Alichas. Cloves – found in beverages, especially teas and coffees Thyme – used as a medicinal herb in Ethiopian beverages. More on drinks in the frame above. Our revolution is an internal revolution to make Yourself... a better person. Amir Vahab's revolution is though his music -- traditional music through his mastery of the Tambour, an ancient Persian lute. Vahab's began through a different sort of revolution, the Iranian Revolution of 1979. A resident of New York since the early 80s, Vahab has been sharing his love and affiliation for tradition of a Persian/Turkish-influenced music, but exhibited a music esoteric beyond nationality and meant to elevate to a higher level of humanity and spirituality. He has taught this aesthetic approach to music for decades and grows himself through its influence. We are happy to host Amir Alan Vahab, Wednesday 12/28 at 8pm. Under the Grass Roof. Please join us. #BERBERE: If you encounter an Ethiopian dish that is red or reddish, chances are it has liberal amounts of Berbere in it. This spice blend is based on Ethiopian Capsicum Red Pepper, a medium hot pepper that packs a punch but does not overwhelm the flavor of a dish. Along with that, Berbere contains a variety of spices, most consistently cardamom and salt, but also fenugreek, ajwain, cloves, coriander, rue, cumin, nigella, and many more. No two Berbere are alike, and they can have dozens of ingredients or just a few. Documented use of Berbere as a mix goes as far back as the reign of the Zagwe kings in the 13th century, but almost certainly it was used well before this period. There are many recipes online for Berbere, and some stores sell the mix on their shelves. Beware of premade mixes that contain paprika though, they will not nearly have the same kick and balance as Berbere from the source. Our Berbere comes homemade from Addis Ababa. Will be selling it to you soon. More about Ethiopian spices coming in the frame above. Stay tuned, follow us. #spices #ethiopia #ethiopianfood #vegan #spicerack
