I had the pleasure and honor of being a guest on @entredospodcast where we talked about reading, raising bilingual kids, and why I’m a slacker parent who rarely reads bedtime stories. 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re raising bilingual kids, you have to check out this awesome podcast!
Yesterday I posted about how lovely it was to reunite with our family members that live in a different country than we do. We’re fortunate to be able to cross that border with ease, but I can’t stop thinking about the many people for whom the border crossing is traumatic, horrifying, often deadly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Most folks that go to the U.S. seeking asylum aren’t up to date on the fact that their children can now be ripped away at the border; they only know that if they stay in their home country, they will die. I’m ashamed and heartbroken that so many people have decided that an act as cruel and inhumane as separating kids from their parents is ok 💔. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Illustration by @lazy.beam
This is the best part of summer. The part where we make the long drive to my parents’ home in Mexico, unload from the car in a frenzy of missing shoes, too many bags, and half-eaten snacks— and run inside to love our people. 💜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And you know what’s amazing? Kids know their people. Even if we haven’t seen each other for months and months, even if they’re a little shy at first, they can instinctually recognize family, instantly feel comfortable, secure, loved. The distance is the hard part of families split by borders, but the reunion? That’s the great part. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (Chiquita #1 here in front of my high school 😊)
Last year I talked to someone who gave herself a summer reading project. She chose just one book (un libro super largo!) and read it all summer long. 📖 If this sounds intriguing to you, I highly recommend giving it a try with “El tiempo entre costuras.” At 600+ pages, it’s on the long side, but sooooo good. (And if summer TV binging is more your style, the TV adaptation is also beautiful and really well done! It’s “The Time in Between” in English on Netflix!) #solbookreview
