Due to frigid weather ❄️, Young Scholars is closed today! Students have off tomorrow as well for Staff Professional Development, so enjoy the extended weekend and stay warm!
#TodayAtYoungScholars some of our friends from @munroecreative hosted scholars from across all 3 grades for @phillyadclub. For the past few weeks, our scholars have learned about branding, advertising, and product development. Today, as part of their final assignment, they captured product shots of the custom ice-cream flavors they designed and enjoyed snacks inspired by their imaginative flavors!
We’re all smiles because today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, where we honor the legacy of the civil rights activist by performing acts of service in and around our communities. Our scholars contributed to the national efforts by donating canned food goods to One Day At A Time, “ODAAT,” a Philadelphia-based substance abuse recovery and support program. We also require our eighth grade scholars to complete 20 hours of service throughout the year as a graduation requirement. These are just some of the ways we reiterate the importance of active citizenship and encourage our scholars to be personally invested in their communities! 💙🦁
Quarter 2 grades closed this afternoon. We concluded the first half of the year with quarterly exams and an early dismissal for our scholars. On Monday, we will observe Martin Luther King Jr.’s National Day of Service, so classes will resume on Tuesday! Have a great extended weekend. Happy #friyay
Quarter two is quickly coming to an end, which means we’re already nearly halfway through the school year. Nearly 100 school days have passed, and we’re honestly wondering where all the time went. So far we’ve hosted Induction Ceremonies for all our scholars at the beginning of the year; Spirit Week; a fall social event; two P.R.I.D.E rewards trips to Rolling Thunder and FunPlex; student-led conferences for Q1 report cards; our 20 year anniversary event; 3 Experience Month Expeditions to over 18 businesses and institutions around the city; 1 Thanksgiving feast for students and families; our annual Turkey Bowl; and The Big Spender’s Auction. Our boy’s basketball team played (and won) 2 games so far. Our Lady Lions cheer team won first place in their first competition. We’re taking quarterly exams all week, and remaining super focused on our Quarter 2 goals! Check out our InstaStory for some recaps of the events above. Also, don’t forget we’re accepting applications until the 28th of this month! LINK IN OUR BIO 🔗
In art class our scholars explore traditional mediums including pencil, paint, pastels, and charcoal. We also offer a class in our Imagination Lab that introduces scholars to STEAM related art applications. We value art overall as a vehicle for creative expression: “Middle school is such an emotional time in a student’s life; Art becomes an opportunity to say what you want without having to form words.” -Ms. Krajewski, art teacher. ***All artwork featured in this post was produced by our students for an exploration of color, shape, and pattern.***
At 4:14 p.m. on a typical Friday afternoon at Young Scholars Charter School, most of the students are gone for the weekend. Friday Folders have been distributed. High paycheck earners have been announced. All the buses, except maybe 24 (🤦🏽♂️😂), have pulled off from 7th street, and we’re heading into the weekend. We didn’t have school today, but as the weekend approaches it’s important that we start to reset our brains after a long break. The past 2 weeks have been about celebratory nights and sleeping in late. Spend this weekend reflecting on your personal and academic goals. Ask yourself: how can I be better than before? How can I go a little harder? How do I set myself up for success? Next Tuesday we pick up where we left off. There’s only a few days of Q2 left when we return, so we’re going to finish this quarter and the rest of the year like true scholars. Happy #FRIYAY
First #TBT of 2019? Hmmm 🤔 how about a recap of the P.R.I.D.E Rewards trip we hosted to @funplexml right before our Winter break. 🎮🎳🎟🏎🎠🎢 • • • Break is slowly but surely coming to an end, so we hope our scholars and staff are enjoying it and everyone else is having a productive start to the new year! All scholars report back to school on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. #throwbackthursday #happynewyear
Sending holiday cheer and well wishes to our community of scholars, parents, teachers, staff, and supporters. We hope the Winter holidays are filled with an abundance of love, light, laughter, and joy! Happy Holidays. ☃️❄️🎄🎁🕎✡️
