. The World Water crisis - the facts
1. 785 million around the world are walking more than 30 minutes for collection time and/ or using a poor source like surface water (1).
2. Over 829,000 people are estimated to die each year from diarrhea as a result of unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hand hygiene. When water is not readily available, people may decide hand washing is not a priority, adding to the likelihood of diarrhea and other diseases. (2)
3. Sadly today, over 800 children will die from preventable diseases caused by poor water, and a lack of sanitation and hygiene. (3)
4. Women and children spend over 200 million hours every day just to collect water. (4)
5. The average woman in rural Africa walks almost 4 miles every day to haul 40 pounds of water. (5)
6. More people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war. (6)
7. Diarrhea kills 2,195 children every day—more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. Diarrheal diseases account for 1 in 9 child deaths worldwide, making diarrhea the second leading cause of death among children under the age of 5. (7).
8. According to the World Health Organisation, 2.3 billion people, that’s 1 in 3 worldwide, lack access to even basic sanitation services. The majority of these people either practice open defecation or use unimproved sanitation such as pit latrines and buckets (1).
9. 31% of schools don't have access to basic drinking water services (1).
10. 47% of schools lack basic hygiene services like handwashing stations with soap (1).
11. Each year, children lose 443 million school days because of water related illnesses,of which 272 million are lost due to diarrhea alone (8).
12. For every dollar invested in water and sanitation, there is a $4.30 return in the form of reduced health care costs for individuals and societies around the world. (9)
13. By 2025, Half of the World’s Population will be Living in Water-Stressed Areas. UNESCO predicts that 1.8 billion people will be experiencing water scarcity and half of the world will be living in water stressed conditions by 2025. (10)
