Got to preview the new @squarepieguys yesterday in Old Oakland. Such a beautiful old building, and they will have a bunch of outdoor seating when they decide to open it up; just delivery and takeout to start, beginning 3/1. Love the JLIN pizza (the herbaceous Green Goddess-Caesar dressing is 💥). But they also brought over their @hetchyhots fried chicken sandwich 🔥 made with TWO juicy thighs (and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos). 🤪 And I have always loved their salads; this winter beet number with everything spice and blood orange vinaigrette was a winner. The latest entry in my crazy leftovers games. Sis made delicious lamb shanks in her @instantpotofficial and sent me home with some leftover brothy stewy juicy oniony goodness. I reduced it down, poured it over my celebratory @lapalmamex.sf blue and red tortilla chips from the tablehopper 15 gift bag, flaked some @fiscalinifarmstead sharp cheddar over the chips, plopped a soft egg on top, and anointed it all with some @cholulahotsauce. 💥💥💥

Back on my @lilyonclement game 💪 with @seanonthehill and our latest recruit to #FBDD (Fat Bitches Don’t Diet), my sis @egagliardi75! We were all craving the French dip pho bo, with the most exquisitely rosy and thinly sliced roast beef; it’s one of our city’s best 🏆 banh mi. Got funky 🕺🏽 with the caramel chicken wings, and the duck confit egg rolls also wanted some attention. 👋 I think the lime sinh to (with salty kumquat) is my favorite of the three on offer. Tried out some new dishes, and all I can say is get ready for delicious salad with 🥭 and a bangin’ new combo banh mi. That Rob, can’t stop, won’t stop! ⚡️

I was so sorry when @august1five closed (for many reasons), which meant no more of @chef_manishtyagi’s innovative and delicious Indian dishes. But, not so fast! It ends up he’s now at the recently opened @aurumlosaltos, so you South Bay and Peninsula folks are lucky indeed. He’s continuing his progressive-modern approach, featuring dishes from numerous regions of India, like the Kerala-inspired Brassica Beats (fried cauliflower spiked with curry leaf and mustard seed), and there’s the Gujarati thepla—a flavorful whole wheat and gram-flour flatbread with fenugreek leaves, coriander, and spices—used like a tortilla for The Spoiled Generation, a pulled pork taco reminiscent of Southern barbecue, but from northwest Goa, with sweet and tangy notes. (As you can tell by the names, there’s a sense of playful humor with these dishes.) You can’t miss the Bihari Pitti Pockets with dal sauce—these plump (and vegan!) ravioli highlight chef Manish’s former Italian training, with a divinely complex filling of roasted eggplant, garlic, cilantro, the pop of mustard oil, mashed potato, and Indian pickle. So good! The Coastal Connection Malvani fish curry features a thick piece of ono tenderized with tamarind, nestled in a deep, roasted curry with coconut, onion, tomatoes, and, of course, lots of spices, including turmeric and black peppercorn, that you should mop up with naan. I look forward to exploring more dishes on this enticing and creative menu, hopefully on-site next time. There was a lot to love about the @delmarcoshotel, starting with their heated saltwater pool (I’d float in it for as long as my pruney fingers could handle it). Next time, I’d choose one of the upstairs rooms (or a room with no one above it), but I still loved my Albert Frey suite and patio and artwork, a sunny, happy room. 🌞💛

Sadly, between Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Covid-related closures, dining options in Palm Springs were slim pickings. @roosterandthepig and @workshopkitchenbar weren’t open, and some other meals I had were not worth a mention. It was pretty rough. No, I don’t want a $56 tasting menu with a stuffed portobello mushroom for dinner. 🤣 But, these chilaquiles verdes from the friendly @grandcentralpalmsprings made for a tasty brunch (loved the crisp edges on the sunny side eggs 🍳) and shoutout to the good barista at Ristretto who made a nice cortado for me every morning, although I have no love for the bad barista who made my last one before hitting the road and it was truly tragic. ☕️❌ Not the way to start an eight-hour drive. (I was so happy to return to my Gaggia this morning, with some awesome fruity Ethiopia Sidama Damo beans from @cafecallefortaleza. 🙏✨) I swear, I have said I would never ever go into the restaurant biz, but I sure have some ideas for Palm Springs.💡🌴
