Rosa, sewing a buttonhole by hand on our Bocchi model. The firm spread collar poplin shirt. . Requiring nearly 10 times the amount of time to do, opening and sewing a buttonhole, without any assistance of modern machinery, is a decided touch of #luxury, in every sense of the word. . Of course, there are handmade buttonholes, and there are handmade buttonholes. “Hand-finished”, “hand-embroidered” or “hand-decorated” buttonholes should be disregarded from comparison entirely, as they are simply “seasoning” on top of a machine-closed buttonhole, requiring no skill in achieving structural integrity - holding the fabrics together, as a machine has already done that. . Incidentally, hand-sewn buttonholes are not suitable on every fabric from the view of strength and longevity of the shirt. On fabrics with coarser (thicker) yarns or more open-weave - linen, denim, flannel (less formal, in a nutshell), the risk of the fabric breaking away from the looser hand stitches are high. Fabrics are intersecting threads, after all. . Under these circumstances, we simply make the buttonholes expertly by machine, as a shirtmaker should. We certainly do not employ “hand-finishing” tactics for the purpose of continuing the claim of a “hand-made buttonhole”. . It is not our way. . #marol #handmade #philosophy
