Acupuncture is not only excellent to enhance fertility (by 26% when combined with Western fertility treatments!) but throughout your entire pregnancy (easing nausea, fatigue, heartburn, and low back pain), as well as leading up to delivery to help prepare your body for labour. Studies have found that birth preparation acupuncture can have the following effects: * Reduced labour by 2-3 hours * Increased cervical ripening (important for the onset of labour!) * Reduced cesarean rates * Improved contractions * Reduced need for pain medication By tonifying and nourishing the body through the stimulation of certain points and bringing bloodflow to the pelvis, this facilitates the softening and relaxation of uterine ligaments, encourages fetal descent, and prepares the uterine muscles to contract when needed. What’s also useful is that acupuncture + moxibustion can help to reverse a baby in breech position. In Ontario, breech babies require an automatic cesarean as there are only a few select practitioners trained and willing to deliver babies this way, given the increased risk. Side note: acupuncture + moxa combined with a lumbar & pelvic chiropractic adjustment worked immediately for me! If you’re someone who suffers from allergies, this is not a fun time of year 🙈. I’ve been getting a lot of questions around how to naturally support your body if you have seasonal allergies and here are a FEW of my favourite things! First and foremost, it’s important to address the root cause. For many, cleansing a congested lymphatic system is key to resolving allergies and making sure they don’t return. When your “sewage system” is full so to speak, it can make you sensitive and reactive to your environment. Thankfully, this can easily be accomplished through herbs, diet, and lifestyle modifications. Beyond that, here are some excellent supportive therapies: • Local bee Pollen: contains a powerful nutritional profile and has been shown to cause a desensitization to local plants (this is why you should always consume pollen/honey from your own area). It’s best to start before allergy season, but better late than never! • Fresh Nettle (Urtica dioica) - it’s ironic how these begin to grow EVERYWHERE when they’re needed most (nature knows!). One of the best natural anti-histamines, especially when used fresh and has been studied to inhibit prostaglandin formation as well have activity against histamine receptors, preventing inflammation. •Butterbur (petasites) - this herb has been studied to inhibit mast cell degranulation and the accumulation of eosinophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes, making it a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic plant. It’s also great for asthma! •Acupuncture: this will help to remove any stagnation and toxicities in the body and there are specific points to assist with opening the nasal passages + aid drainage. It can help to resolve sneezing, itchiness, and painful/watery eyes. Not to mention it’s very relaxing! • Neti Pot: this ancient practice will help you to remove any debris or mucous that has accumulated in your nasal cavity and continues to cause irritation. If you’re making your own saltwater solution - make sure it’s with distilled water! • Homeopathy: it doesn’t seem to get enough credit for the major effects it can produce. *continued in comments*
Are the pill’s side effects worth swallowing? 😷 The birth control pill is handed out like candy not only to most sexually active women but any woman with a hormonal concern like painful, heavy, or irregular periods, acne, PCOS, endometriosis, mood swings, breast tenderness, weight gain, & bloating - to name a few. Ironically, this medication can cause many of the symptoms it hopes to correct (often making them even worse!) while also posing a dangerous list of side effects. Unfortunately, many women aren’t warned about this when handed their prescription. Here are SOME related adverse drug reactions (the entire list was too long for this post): * Breast, cervical, and liver cancer * Stroke * Heart attack * Gall bladder disease * Inflammatory bowel disease * High blood pressure * Neuro-ocular lesions * Pulmonary embolism We also know that the birth control pill interferes with your thyroid hormones (oral estrogen raises TBG, CBG, and SHBG), compromises future fertility, increases risk of depression, stimulates weight gain, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance, causes headaches/migraines, can worsen acne, and makes you more susceptible to autoimmune disease. Even further, the birth control pill is known to decrease the following vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in your body: * B vitamins - B2, B6, B12, folic acid * Vitamin C & E * Selenium * Zinc * Magnesium * Coenzyme Q10 *Not to mention these depletions will cause their own set of side effects in addition to the ones above. Now if you do have a hormonal concern, the birth control pill is not a sustainable long-term solution and can even make you WORSE off in the long-run. Instead, your body needs balancing which is done most effectively with natural and supportive therapies like diet, lifestyle, herbs, and acupuncture. On the other hand however, if you are taking the pill to prevent pregnancy, there are other safe and effective methods to consider! The Fertility Awareness Method is one and if practiced *correctly* has a 99.4% success rate. At the end of the day, know that you have options and taking a root-cause approach as opposed to a symptom-based approach is key 💗🌱

Hormone imbalance is such a common issue these days and specialized testing is an integral piece of the puzzle when it comes to assessing where the problems are and monitoring progress of treatment. I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about the Dutch Test lately and I’m glad, because it’s the most comprehensive and insightful test currently available! If you are concerned you may have a hormone imbalance, then this test can be a perfect fit for you along with a full assessment to determine an individualized plan of action. Here are some valuable questions that can be answered by taking this test: * Do you ovulate? Looking at estrogen and progesterone levels during the time in which this test is taken will show whether or not these hormones are balanced enough for your egg to be released (estrogen) and implanted (progesterone). * How are your adrenals? Determine adrenal health by measuring free and total cortisol levels. 80% of your cortisol production is metabolized (“total”) and a saliva or blood test will miss this. * Is your thyroid impacted? Insight into thyroid function based on production and clearance of cortisol levels (the adrenal-thyroid connection) * Are you inflamed? Look at overall DHEA production - the vitality hormone! It’s a precursor to male and female sex hormones and low DHEA can point to adrenal insufficiency. Also, lack of “sulfation” of this hormone into DHEA-S can signal inflammation in the body. * Is your liver clearing your estrogen? Estrogen should be used and then removed by the liver and finally the colon. This test shows the different estrogen pathways (some are more protective and others are potentially cancer-causing metabolites). Also, how well you are methylating (detoxing estrogen). All of this can point to whether or not your liver needs be optimized. * Insight into testosterone metabolites: if you have any “androgenic” symptoms like acne/oily skin, hair thinning, excess body hair), you may have high “5 alpha reductase” activity, which is correlated to PCOS. This metabolite is specifically tested in urine and not saliva. * Are you estrogen dominant? This is one of the most damaging... **continued in comments**

The product on the left does this and it’s a 100% natural herbal formula. The product on the right however, offers zero benefit when it comes to oral hygiene (how ironic!) and actually contains some terrible ingredients for your health (and the environment). Let’s break it down. For example: * Poloxamer 407 - a surfactant used to dissolve oils; shown to cause hypercholesterolemia and possible kidney toxicity * Sodium saccharin - artificial sweetener; evidence of cancer risk * Parabens (methyl and propyl); preservative; known carcinogen and linked to reproductive toxicity. * Propylne glycol - an additive used in antifreeze; known as a probable carcinogen, produces skin irritation and allergic reactions, found to produce neurological symptoms, and linked to kidney and liver toxicity. * Dyes (blue 1, yellow 6, and green 3) - for aesthetics; linked to various types of cancer. What’s even more head spinning is that the main ACTIVE ingredient in this product “cetylpyridinium chloride”, has been shown to cause oral toxicity. Talk about counterproductive 😳. Since your oral health strongly influences your overall health, I always advise my patients on ways to optimize their oral hygiene. A proper mouthwash and toothpaste can do wonders, and as ALWAYS, diet is key. Now you don’t have to use the product on the left, but please don’t use the one on the right 🙈. As one of my mentors (John Redden) loves to say, “If you don’t have a filter, you’re the filter!” Unfortunately, tap water is pretty dirty. There is a long list of contaminants including chlorine, lead, mercury, arsenic, fluoride, pesticides, harmful bacteria, pharmaceuticals and hormones - ESTROGEN in particular. Not only are these very disruptive to your body’s ecology (fertility included!), but since water is supposed to hydrate and cleanse you, how can it do its job effectively when it’s laced with so many hard substances? Even more, this excerpt is taken off toronto.ca explaining how our water is chemically treated before it gets to the tap: Before water is pumped for distribution to homes and businesses, the following is added: * Chlorine to destroy bacteria, algae and viruses (this produces free radicals and cellular damage to your body) * Fluoride to help prevent tooth decay (this is alarming considering its banned in 98% of Europe, given the lack of evidence to its benefit and clear evidence to its harm. In fact, the presence of fluoride has been consistently linked to brain damage and a lowered IQ in children - Aravind et al., 2016). * Ammonia to ensure chlorine levels remain consistent as water travels through the distribution system * Phosphoric acid, which is used for corrosion control to help create a barrier between residential lead pipes and drinking water * Alum or Poly Aluminum Chloride is added to the water to form a jelly-like substance that joins larger particles called floc, and goes through additional filtration. Scary, right?? **I recommend getting a high-quality carbon filtration system (ie. Berkey), find a local Spring, or get a reverse osmosis system installed in your sink. Also, never drink from plastic water bottles or store your water in plastic (especially the highly purified waters like R.O. or steam distilled as they will leech the plastic into the water). Plastic is an endocrine (hormone) disruptor that should be avoided 💧

The @environmentalworkinggroup has released their 2019 “dirty dozen” and “clean fifteen” lists! Buying organic can be expensive, but certainly worth it when it comes to the top dirty in produce. Each year EWG analyzes over 40,000 samples of 47 different types of produce to determine the highest and lowest in pesticide residues. Unfortunately, some produce can contain over 50 different types of pesticides and in the most recent analysis, 225 possible types of pesticides were identified. Why are pesticides an issue? Depending on the type, they are: * Known or probable carcinogens * Hormone disrupters * Neurotoxins * Developmental or reproductive toxins * Toxic to honeybees (environmental damage!) Scary, huh? So what’s the verdict? Strawberries are ranking dirtiest for the 4th year in a row! And avocados are the cleanest 😏. Apples commonly make the dirty list too, with 80% of the conventionally grown ones containing “diphenylamine”. This chemical treatment prevents browning but has the potential to breakdown into “nitrosamines” - known to be carcinogenic! With the rise in cancer rates especially, I think it’s very important that we invest in the healthiest food choices, over anything else. Your body is your home! I do understand though the financial burden of choosing organic, so here are some tips: * Check out your local farmers markets - you can speak to them directly about what goes on their produce, I find it to be a much better bargain, AND you can count on it being sooo much fresher! * Grow your own produce - this is so rewarding and you know exactly what’s going on your crops, not to mention they become infused with your love. * Don’t spray your lawn in the spring and pick all the dandelion greens for salads! This bitter green has tremendous health properties and are even sold for a hefty price at the grocer. Thankfully, they grow abundantly everywhere in Ontario for free. If you can’t purchase organic however, you should still eat fruits and vegetables that are conventional - it would be worse to skip them entirely! At the end of the day, eat all your food with love and try your best 🌿❤️ #foodismedicine

Whether it’s coming off the pill, looking to conceive, managing painful, irregular or heavy periods, night sweats, combating hormonal acne, weight gain, or more pressing issues like endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, and infertility - uncovering an underlying hormone imbalance is essential! One thing I’d like to address off the bat is that you shouldn’t go ON birth control to correct hormone imbalance as this will just serve as a bandaid solution and actually further perpetuate the problem, while introducing a number of other unwanted side effects (not to mention a slew of vitamin deficiencies!). If your body is speaking out with any of these signs or symptoms, there is certainly a deeper issue going on that should be corrected by providing your body with the right conditions to heal itself. How do we do that? You CAN have coffee ritual bliss without the actual coffee! This is C H A G A J A V A: * Chaga * Reishi * Roasted dandelion * Roasted chicory *Blended with home-made cashew milk and whole dates to sweeten. Topped with Ceylon Cinnamon. • I often get asked about coffee as it relates to one’s health and the truth is, it’s not serving you as much as you’d hope. Moderation is ok, but the tendency is to over-consume this enticing beverage. The problem with coffee is that it’s taxing on your adrenal glands (your energy storehouse) and will eventually contribute to energy crashes, fatigue, and possibly exhaustion as it will keep taking energy from these glands - without nourishing them in return. Coffee is also dehydrating, acidic, and conventional brands are ridden with pesticides (always go organic!). I thought this would be an important post to share because I’d like to create awareness surrounding reading food labels. In today’s world we really need to be conscious consumers and make informed choices - especially regarding our health and food. There is a lot of misleading marketing out there too, which is why you need to know the ingredients that go into “food” products. One example that I find absolutely shocking because it’s offered in hospitals to cancer patients and people who are supposed to be healing, is “ENSURE”. Naturally, anyone in a hospital would require the highest in nutrition, but this is what they are being served. It claims to be a “nutritional shake” that not only contains CARCINOGENIC compounds (i.e. carrageenan), but is completely devoid of any REAL, WHOLESOME nutrients. It’s a synthetic sludge of chemicals in white sugar, canola/corn oil, and hormone-laden dairy. Basically, the most inflammatory and worst thing you can put in your body at a time when it needs nourishment the most. Note: Carrageenan is so toxic and inflaming to the human digestive system that this food additive is formally classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) as a potential human carcinogen. Times need to change and your biggest impact is spread through consumer choice. Shockingly, the hospital doesn’t control the food that is served to patients as this is owned by a separate corporate entity (sayyy what????) - but you CAN downright refuse it. Not to mention, never buy this on your own. Now this is just one of MANY examples I see on the market, so for starters, get familiar with your labels and start asking questions! And please, for your own livelihood, don’t drink Ensure.

Today I’d love to highlight one of my favourite herbs... NETTLE (urtica dioica)! But in particular, the SEED. I’ve used nettle seeds successfully for the following cases: • Preventing kidney failure, dialysis, and reversing chronic kidney disease: it has raised eGFR levels by 20 points and counting, still going strong 1 year later. Compared to the rest of the plant, nettle seed has a particular affinity to the kidneys and urinary tract. • To relieve swelling (aka edema): it’s a powerful diuretic to help remove excess fluids from the body. • To assist with fertility: it’s a strong “Jing” or kidney essence tonic which is essential to build when looking to conceive. • As a daily nutritive or whole foods supplement that can be easily absorbed and assimilated by the body. I use this instead of an isolated multivitamin that your body can barely absorb because it’s in its inorganic state. Nettle seed is PACKED with nourishment: 1 cup will actually provide you with 32-42% of your daily calcium requirement (this goes for nettle leaf too). It’s full of B-complex vitamins, A, C, E, K, magnesium, selenium, IRON - and is one of the best ways to build iron in the body (along with yellow dock) while targeting root causes of deficiency. • An aside on nettle ROOT: I use this when there are excess androgens in the body resulting in hair loss and hair thinning, as well as acne. It will block DHT production which is responsible for causing hair follicles to shrink and eventually die, as well as excess sebum production. *There are no interactions or contraindications to taking this herb, although always consult a health professional trained in herbal/Naturopathic medicine before starting a regimen and know where you’re getting your herbs from! *Dried herbs begin to lose their potency after a year and so you’ll need a fresh, trusted source. Especially one that is organic/wild-crafted.
A clean beauty routine is so important to me because... what goes on your body, goes in! Part of this is having a healthy hair care regime. Common toxins found in shampoos and conditioners include: • Sulfates: a chemical detergent that is a hormone disrupting agent (everyone needs hormone balancing these days!) and many contain dioxane, a known carcinogen. • Parabens: these are xenoestrogens which mimic your natural hormones, disrupting them further. They also pose a cancer risk. • Fragrance or “Parfum”: a blanket term for 3,100 chemicals used in the fragrance industry which can all have disastrous effects. Unless the fragrance comes from 100% pure essential oils (and it will say so on the packaging), then you want to steer clear! • Triclosan: an antibacterial agent (why are we obsessed with killing good bacteria??) as well as endocrine disrupter. It’s been linked to immune system issues, among many others. • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): this has been classified as a “developmental toxicant,” which means to interfere with development (watch out especially in pregnancy!) and also contaminated with the carcinogen known as dioxane. Needles to say, I feel much better when all of these things are OUT of my products. So I want to highlight one of my absolute favourite hair care lines right now, @johnmastersorganics! I’ve tried so many natural brands and these change-makers know what they’re doing. My hair feels incredibly soft, clean, and SHINES, without being weighed down. I’m obsessed, check them out!
