A FAN GIRL review from International Film Festival Rotterdam - IFFR: In Review Online writes: “Captured in claustrophobic 4:3 aspect ratio, Jadaone consistently fixes her focus on protagonist Jane (Charlie Dizon), which over the course of the film then traps the viewer in various positions of social awkwardness and misconstrued power dynamics. “Likewise essential and beneficial to the film is that it never shifts from its central perspective. Fan Girl is Jane’s story, after all, told through her eyes and informed by her fantasies. Each reveal, then, layers Paulo’s duality, as the film’s critical angle is prominently shown through Jane’s celebrity-fixated imagination that refuses to accept reality. It isn’t until the film’s third act that this facade breaks to unveil an ugly (if obvious) truth — that emotional abuse is largely, systemically forgiven for those in positions of power. Idolization is inherently linked to the concept of normalization, and through Jane’s eyes and warped perception, the viewer witnesses two cases of severe abuse that seem to stem from two different people in two different social constructs. Perhaps, then, more time and clarity should have been dedicated to this tense third act, which deepens and complicates the film’s ideas, especially when considering the film’s crucial final moments. But thanks to its interrogations — and clever mode of presentation — Antoinette Jadaone’s Fan Girl proves to be an endlessly fascinating character study that never once settles for easy answers.” https://inreviewonline.com/2021/06/07/fan-girl/

✨ Yay, another glowing review of FAN GIRL from International Film Festival Rotterdam - IFFR ✨ 3.5 out of 4 stars! Here’s the translation: Jane comes home from a rude awakening, say, in Fan Girl. The beginning of the film reminded me of Sweat, which was shown at IFFR earlier in 2021, because of the performance in the shopping centre. That's where it ends, because in this film you don't see the idol, but the fan. So the other side of the story. And that fan has the wrong idea of what an idol is like in real life now. They just seem to be people. Really, I'm not lying! Nice to see that Paulo Avelino plays a fictional version of himself in this film. He will know what it feels like to be adored. That adoration also drips from Jane. We often see her dreaming away in a world that doesn't exist. It just happens in her head. She lives in a dream world. Sometimes you ask yourself what is real and what is not. If you look at her private situation, that's not very strange either. The idealization of her greatest hero stems from the films he makes and how he is praised by the media. She wants to be his wife because of a distorted image, but also because of her home situation. Does she even know what normal is? I do not think so. Compliments to both Paulo Avelino and Charlie Dizon for playing believable roles. You can see that there is a chemistry that can be felt by the viewer. On the one hand there is an attraction, but on the other hand there is also aversion. Both are therefore more alike than you might think. This is especially reflected in the story, where you as a viewer are often misled. You never know what's coming, so there is tension in the film on several levels. Dark and light also play a role in this, as does the mysterious mansion. Fan Girl shows what kind of distorted image a fan can have of her idol. She takes hope from her idol wherever that person is just human. We also see enough chemistry, just like tension, because of the different plot twists. A more than successful film! https://www.deprotagonisten.nl/recensies/fan-girl/

✨ Another glowing FAN GIRL review from @aaafilmfest Austin Asian American Film Festival ✨ “Fan Girl is an intensely emotional drama that will make you take a hard look at both sides of pop culture fandom. Antoinette Jadaone's heartbreaking story is brought to life brilliantly by Charlie Dizon and Paulo Avelino in the lead roles. Buckle up and prepare yourself for an emotional journey that does not let you off the hook as easily as you might want it to.” Read the full write-up here: https://www.twoohsix.com/2021/06/fan-girl-2021-aaaff-movie-review.html?m=1 @pauavelino @charliedizon_

FAN GIRL review at the @aaafilmfest from The Austin Chronicle: “It's hard to say how much of the real Avelino is in Antoinette Jadaone's emotionally grueling exploration of the toxic sheen of celebrity. He undoubtedly shows a vulnerability here, but the on-screen Avilono is more than just a sad boy with a fancy car: he is dysfunctional, disassociated, lonely, brutish, and ultimately unsure whether he hates or loves his gilded cage. Yet Fan Girl is really Jane's story, and Dizon captures how she is painfully disabused of all her teenage dreams. Her increasingly ugly realizations about who Avelino really is - flawed and fucked up - are given multiple levels by the cinematography of Neil Daza, who balances reality with gossamer fantasy, and adds layers in between that make the dissection of power and powerlessness all the more incisive. After all, Fan Girl isn't a woe-is-me moment for Avelino, but a pointed critique of both a celebrity system that locks stars and fans in untenable roles, and also of the broader misogyny within Filipino culture. If this is how even the most beatified of men treat women who have been channeled into adoring them, Jadaone coolly implies, what does that say about everyone else?” https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/screens/2021-06-04/aaaff-review-fan-girl/?fbclid=IwAR2sVzkGtRACJNvkNC0rmjt6xT94lPG1XEkHYurvRJ8jjBqNhIe7ZOudvEg
