Last post from @maconcreekmalt, before we hand it over to @thelandloom. There were so many more pictures about farmers and grains and soil health and food that we wanted to share with you all, but alas these germ mongers came down with a bad case of the boogers. It’s a good reminder of why Zach and I wanted to run a business together in the first place- to have the flexibility to raise our children ourselves and to support the long term viability of local farms. We often talk about all the things we should be doing for the kids, like other families, but then remind ourselves- how many other kids get to go to work with their parents? Get to drive a hilo? Get to work the cash registers at @argusfarmstop? And get spoiled rotten by all the area farmers? Reuben in particular likes big trucks, heavy equipment, and digging in the dirt. Please follow us on IG and FB to learn more about what we do, why we do it, and how you can participate. We look forward to meeting you at #lfs2019, where we’ll be talking about oats until we can’t talk anymore!
ICYMI- @thesalinepost recently published a story about the collaboration between @maconcreekmalt and @atlasdistillingco. We always talk about #localfood, but #craftbeer and #craftspirits could and does have a profound impact on #localfarms. Atlas Distilling Co reached out to MCMH in the beginning (they’re not even open yet) to help them source as much as they can locally. Already they are purchasing from 8 local farms- @themillatjaniesfarm, @mushroom_head_malts, Schmidt Farms is Auburn, West Acres, T3 Farm, Penn Acres, Luckhart Family Farm, and @zilkefarmkitchen- plus @motorcitymalthouse. Working with Justin at Atlas is such a pleasure. Great things are happening in #clintonmichigan.
@maconcreekmalt here for our last day on the @localfoodsummit Instagram account. Sick kiddos put us a couple of days behind on our grain agenda.... We were SHOCKED and so grateful to see both @argusfarmstop locations sell out of our new 3 Grain Cereal. This lovely display of a Savory Squashy Oatmeal recipe is probably the culprit? If you grabbed a bag of the initial stock of this cereal please let us know how you prepared it. #savory or #sweet? #breakfast, #lunch, or #dinner? #hot or #cold?
Speaking of #heritagegrains and #seedsaving... this past year we had the privilege of working alongside organic advocate and local food hero, Mike Adsit. This aroonstook rye was beautiful and deliciously amazing. We only wish there had been more of it! #Repost @maconcreekmalt with @get_repost ・・・ #heritage #aroostook #rye from field to food: ▪️in the field @plyorchards ▪️on farm cleaning with a rotary screen and bagging before delivery to the malthouse ▪️after in house cleaning with a fanning mill and spiral separator ▪️5lb sample to @zingermansbakehouse for @thefig_and_thesea to experiment with #locallygrown #wholegrain #ryewhiskey #puremichigan #fieldtofork #organic
@maconcreekmalt at home caring for sick kiddos instead of attending the #lfs2019 planning meeting at @argusfarmstop. Working with #michiganfarms to grow and market #heritagegrains is an absolute delight. Here are a few pictures of us cleaning #bloodybutcher #corn for Hitch Point Farm, a #womanowned, #animalpowered, #organictransition farm at @tillersinternational. Isn’t it gorgeous?!?! 😍😍😍 #eatwholegrains #wholegrains #heritagecorn #openpollinated #seedsaving #localfoodallyearlong #annarboreats
@maconcreekmalt here for another day. One of the “challenges” we encountered as we expanded our processing to food products is how to use more whole grains ourselves. With two kiddos, two businesses, and a farmette, we weren’t doing a lot of cooking ourselves. I personally never liked oatmeal, always too sugary or too bland. I’ve always liked foods with a lot of texture, so I created this 3 Grain Cereal mix. It was #oatmeal, cracked #wheat, and cracked #rye. I cook it with milk, walnuts or cashews, #apples, #cherries, and #honey for 15 minutes. That’s enough time for the grains to soften up but not cook all the way. It’s a complex #hotcereal to drive away the #drearywearies on a cold winter morning. It’s like oatmeal, but with more heart. #eatwholegrains #wholegrains #localfoodallyearlong #michigangrown #puremichigan #michiganfarm #breakfast #breakfastideas
@maconcreekmalt here again. This morning I rolled and packed our #fresh, #raw, #organic #oatmeal for @argusfarmstop. One of the many things that makes our oatmeal different is that it is raw. Most commercially available oats are saturated in a high pressure steam chamber, then rolled and toasted. This renders them shelf stable but also a bit tasteless. At MCMH, whole raw oat groats go in our dry mill, oat flakes come out. Our oatmeal is available at @argusfarmstop, @mcpherson_local, @milancoffeeworks, and through our website. We also delivery bulk quantities to @zingermansbakehouse, @zingermansdeli, and @dexterhighschool. #lfs2019
@maconcreekmalt here. One of the gifts that just keeps giving is our retail partners, like @mcpherson_local, @argusfarmstop, @milancoffeeworks. We love seeing them and their support and enthusiasm keeps us innovating. If you’re in #salinemichigan today, stop at McPherson Local and meet other #localfood heros! #Repost @mcpherson_local with @get_repost ・・・ Today from 1-4pm we are welcoming @petalsandbutters, @legacywholefoodbar, and @teffchef into our shop for a vendor show! @maconcreekmalt here for the next couple of days. We started this wholesale grains processing business in 2015 with intention to make #craftmalt for the #craftbeer and #craftspirits industry using locally grown grains. Our first #barley delivery was 7 tons, but it came with a 50lb of hard red #wheat harvested that day and still warm from the sun. Like produce farmers, grain farmers grow a diversity of crops in rotation to maintain and manage soil health and ecosystems. Since all those crops need markets, we’ve been working every day to diversify our infrastructure to bring #fresh, #local, #nongmo #wheat, #rye, #corn, #oats, and #beans to local restaurants, stores, and households. We’ll be sharing more of our story and adventures over the next couple of days. Feel free to ask us questions. To start, we’re Zach and Megan Goldenberg of #salinemichigan. Since starting MCMH, we’ve added Reuben (3.5) and Jakob (0.5) to the team. Zach and I have always wanted to run a business together. Zach designed and built/bought all of our equipment, while I mostly run the business. Zach’s number 1 rule is that you try to fix your own problem 3 different ways before asking for help. Because of that rule, I’ve learned how to operate and fix a lot of equipment on my own, but I still call in Zach to clean up my messes. Zach also works full time at the City of Ann Arbor keeping the equipment running at the Water Treatment Facility, and I work part time at @newgrowthinfoodsystems helping communities across the country foster more resilient food and agriculture systems. Needless to say- we don’t get enough sleep.
