Does your school called special ed classrooms “units”? This seems to be something unique to special education classrooms. To me, it promotes this idea that children serviced in those classrooms are “separate” or “other” than the classrooms in the rest of the school. “Unit” is not an inclusive term. If you need a different term, try “specialized learning classroom” instead. But it’s also ok to just refer to them as “classrooms”... like the rest of the classrooms in your building! Who’s with me? 🙋🏼♀️
What are your favorite indoor plants? This rattlesnake calathea is at the top of my list! Gorgeous color variation. Tolerates low light. And I love how the leaves move depending on the angle of light at different times of the day. I may have to try to find one of these for my classroom. @luna_gifts #plantlady
BLACK LIVES MATTER. As a white person born with white privilege, I recognize that racism is a problem that white people need to actively address. I am committed to doing the work to uncover my own implicit biases that support institutional racism. I am committed to learning more about the history of racism in this country and how it is upheld to this day. As an educator, I am specifically committed to learning about the “School to Prison Pipeline” and what I can actively do to disrupt that system. As a Christian, I am specifically committed to learning more about how the church has been complicit with institutional racism throughout history. You don’t just wake up one day as an “anti-racist”. It’s not a destination, but rather a continual process of learning and growing. I am committed to being an agent of change so that ALL our children can have a better future!!! #blacklivesmatter
If it’s considered a little “extra” to commission portraits of your dogs, then so be it. We are soooo happy with how these turned out! @lolasflair listened to me gush about these beasts and incorporated so many little details that mean so much to us. From Sadie’s daylily in her flower crown and cloudy eyes to Marshall’s dapper bandana and cute ears, she captured them PERFECTLY. These are my favorite part of our living room. Now... time for the cats! Lol!
The @teachercarecrate couldn’t have been more fitting this month! Worked on painting this for some stress relief during a regional Special Education Zoom mtg. We also found out during the meeting that Ohio’s schools will be closed officially for the remainder of the year. Sigh. Sending healing vibes to this world!!! Now back to painting this little reminder for my in-home teacher desk!
I did a thing.
Distance learning is definitely a learning curve for me! This little piece of sunshine is helping me keep all my virtual meetings and online teaching expectations straight. Cute pens don’t hurt, either. Haha! My brother and sister-in-law DIY’d that amazing teacher cup for Christmas this year. Love it! And, of course, snacks! What are your MUST HAVES right now? ... 🖊 Cute pens: @teachercarecrate 📔 Planner cover: @speckledfawns 🖼 Van Gogh portrait: @velvethanddesigns
One of my goals was to read 20 Unread Audio Books this year. 🎧 📚 Swipe right for a closer look at what I’ve read so far. 👉🏻I love @audible, but I had to stop my subscription this year so I could catch up on all the books I hadn’t read yet. They were starting to overwhelm me. Most of what I’ve read this year, I have really enjoyed! I could listen to @bryancranston narrate anything. (He read his autobiography and The Things They Carried - a reread of one of my favorite forced reads in high school.) Misery and I Am Legend were SO INTENSELY GOOD. The Song of Achilles was beautiful in every way. Little Women was like spending time with an old friend. And Daisy Jones and the Six was so fun! I loved all the narrators and found myself wishing the band was actually real. The only book I didn’t love was The Dutch House. I kept listening because it was narrated by Tom Hanks, but the story was kind of dull. Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? It’s ok if you disagree with me! #bookstagram #readlikeateacher
Happy Valentine’s Day! Hello, three day weekend! 🤪
