One of our favorite teachers is in town and yesterday we had the privilege to spend the entire day practicing, learning, and laughing with @nickidoane. Thank you Nicki for an amazing day! Props are friends! Especially in a pose like Parsvottanasana, or Pyramid pose. The challenging part about this pose is keeping the hips square and the side body long, both of which can come out of alignment as the hands reach toward the floor. Working from the lower body up, make sure the back heel is firmly planted pressing the femur bone back and internally rotating the outer thigh. The quadricep of the front thigh is engaged and the kneecap is lifted to keep the knee from hyperextending. The lower body is firmly rooted down while the upper body is lengthening through the side body. Shoulders lift, moving away from the ears, and neck is long. If hamstrings are tight blocks placed underneath the hands help prevent rounding through the back and maintain the integrity of the pose. Pyramid is a great way to get into the entire backline of the body, helps to prepare you for forward folds and inversions, and keeps those hammies long while strengthening the hips!
