Read this morning that Europe might not let Americans in for a long while because our COVID numbers are still so high. So while I might not be able to escape to France for a while, I guess bringing Provence lavender in from my yard will have to do! #lavender
Happy Fathers Day @pkmartin508 !!! It seems fitting in this moment in history to be celebrating the fact that you raised me to know that diversity is vital and to stand up for what I believe in. For all the life lessons you’ve taught me, those are perhaps the most important. Thank you for being who you are and I’m so glad I get to spend the day with you today. Happy Fathers Day!
We went downtown this morning to pay our respects to the memorial that has formed there. I’ll be honest, this week has been emotional. Heartbreaking, anger, sadness, guilt... I’ve felt it all. And I know it’s nothing, absolutely nothing to what my black friends are feeling, what people of color are feeling and have been feeling for years, for decades, for centuries. I will forever be changed by this year, by this week. I will not emerge the other side the same and I hope none of us do. We have work to do, so much work to do. And as a white woman, I will do the work that is necessary to be a true ally, to stand with my brothers and sisters of every color and every background and lift them up. I will use my privilege to change our world because change is coming and we can create a world how it’s always been meant to be. It won’t be comfortable and if you’re white and reading this, know that our road ahead is rocky and bumpy and uncomfortable. We will mess up but in the end, the uncomfortable moments are worth every second if we can use what privilege we have to make a real change. If we can use that privilege to lift voices and change the system. No one ever said it would be easy, but it will be worth it to wake up 10 or 20 years from now in a better world. #blacklivesmatter #istandwithyou
To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of Southern California. But this time down here helping my parents move, the hills around Pasadena where they live are some of the prettiest places I’ve ever seen. And these purple trees (anyone know what these are!?!) are breathtaking right now. We’ve spent the last few days furiously cleaning their new house and putting endless amounts of furniture together so this evening drive around their neighborhood with stunning views was just what we needed. #pasadena
We were supposed to be in Iceland right now but obviously that trip was canceled. Instead, we did end up getting a road trip out of the deal but definitely not for fun and definitely not in the true sense of travel. Nick and I made the very long drive from Portland down to LA yesterday, barely getting out of the car. We’re down here helping my parents move and had our car filled with stuff they had to have shipped to us due to restrictions moving from Hawaii and with our car full, we made the drive down South to help them. We’ll be down here for a while isolating with them and helping them get their house set up. And while this is definitely not a vacation, the open road yesterday at sunrise was a pretty poignant reminder that you don’t really need to fly around the world for beauty. Oftentimes, it’s closer than you think.
This view in our house is one of my favorites, particularly with a vase of fresh flowers on the hearth which right now is a selection of the beautiful roses growing in my garden. #home #roses
