Spending my #EarthDay with my favorites 🌎👫🐶 ••• I have so much to say about how our current systems are negatively affecting our planet, but instead if giving you an opportunity to roll your eyes at the annoying vegan, I’ll just leave you with a few easy habits you could squeeze into your daily routine that seem small but truly will make all the difference in the preservation of our planet and all the life on it (including us!) ••• 1️⃣ Become more aware of your plastic usage. Even if you make a pact to give up something as small as plastic straws, your choice will save millions of sea animals and birds over a lifetime. 2️⃣ Try to have at least one vegan or vegetarian meal per week. You can adapt things you already make on the regular to be animal-free; black beans instead of beef on taco night, tofu instead of chicken in a stir-fry, jackfruit instead of pork in a BBQ sandwich, lentils instead of meatballs in pasta. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, & habitat destruction. 3️⃣ Shop secondhand. Worldwide we consume 80 BILLION new pieces of clothing every year. Our fast fashion culture has created an industry that is the 2nd largest source of planet pollution, only behind the oil industry. 4️⃣ Incorporate more natural beauty products into your routine. Brands such as @kjaerweis and @fillaree have built sustainable, refillable systems to reduce waste. Not only do you protect your own body (and your family’s bodies) by staying away from toxic chemicals, but you also prevent them from being washed down your drain and into our waterways. ••• “I used to wonder why someone didn’t do something about that, and then I realized- I am someone.” You matter. Your actions can make a difference. You have influence over people in your life. Will you use it to harm or heal our Mother Earth?
When the weather is more indecisive than you, 🌷❄️🙃 fight fire with (snow???) with this dynamic duo! Flaky, chapped lips don’t stand a chance! ••• 1️⃣ Clean your slate with this amazing lip exfoliator by @henneorganics in the evening (I have the “Rose Diamond” scent, which is divine!) right before bed 1-2 times per week to slough away any flakes. I love this formula because it has coconut & jojoba oils and shea butter, so it doesn’t cause your lips to feel dry or stripped after the treatment, just smooth & moisturized. 2️⃣ Follow with @loandbeholdnaturals Lip Balm (I’m all about the classic peppermint flavor, but they do have others- like coffee!). I never let my head hit the pillow at night without a slather of this moisturizing & soothing balm on my lips. It’s perfectly formulated to not only feel great on your lips, but also repair damage with Vitamin E and help lips to maintain a balanced moisture level with beeswax. ••• Now, tell me about the weather where you are in emojis! Here’s mine; ☀️7️⃣5️⃣🤗➡️❄️3️⃣0️⃣🤦🏻♀️
Got Tofu (Phobia)? Soy has a seriously bad rap, even though it’s health benefits are plentiful! Here are some reasons to say yes to soy; • On Estrogen; Soy contains Isoflavones, a phytoestrogen that is 1,000 times weaker than human estrogen. If you’re truly worried about your dietary levels of estrogen, your meat/dairy intake will result in higher estrogen levels than soy consumption will ever come close to. And unlike the phytoestrogens in soy, animal estrogen DOES mimic human estrogen in the body, leading to hormonal imbalance. • On Breast Cancer; Studies in Asia suggest that soy consumption is one of the most protective factors when it comes to the development of breast cancer. A 2008 study concluded that daily soy consumption (average 1 cup soy milk or 1/2 cup tofu) lowered a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer by 30%! • On GMO’s; While I recommend always buying organic tofu, most soy produced for human consumption is non-GMO. You’re likely getting more pesticide exposure by eating meat because soy is such a large percentage of factory farmed animal feed- that is, unless you’re buying organic/grass-fed/non-GMO, but even then we’re faced with the estrogen exposure noted above. • On nutrition; Soy has the highest protein & fat content of any legume and is also a great source of iron and FIBER- a nutrient that 97% of Americans don’t get enough of! The isoflavones in soy also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Soy also lowers blood pressure & LDL (bad) cholesterol. • On Men’s Health; Contrary to popular belief, soy does not affect testosterone levels. Soy consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 50%! ••• The @ohsheglows Thai Crunch Salad is a light and refreshing way to incorporate tofu into your diet! I used @funnygirlfarm’s romaine and salad mix as the base (along with a cool, citrusy herb called sorrel!), and topped with diced red peppers, carrots, cucumbers, crispy tofu, almond butter dressing, and roasted Tamari almonds, & cilantro! 😋
When your doggo is the best accessory... 🤗❤️🐶 ••• Had such a fun time at @patchworkmarket today discovering lots of new to me local makers. With a global economy, it’s difficult to have any sort of connection to the people who make the things we use every day. There’s something so special about having the opportunity to meet and have a conversation with the person behind a brand. Not only do you leave with one of a kind handmade goods, but you also make a very direct positive impact to support their businesses and families. How do you #ShopSmall and #ShopLocal? ••• Mug that I can’t wait to sip my morning matcha 🍵 from by @willowvane See what else I picked up today in my stories! 🛍
A few of my favorite things make for the perfect Friday; 1️⃣ Brunch @living_kitchen with a dear friend 🥗👯♀️ 2️⃣ A complete @outdoorvoices getup 🏃🏼♀️ 3️⃣ Sunshine & warm temps ☀️ ••• Hope you all are having an equally wonderful Friday! 💖
ICYMI, I recently shared my current skincare routine on EpicureanEmily.com and showcased some of my favorite green beauty skincare lines! 🌱💚 ••• What skincare product/line have you been loving lately?
Made some almond milk today and I’m showing you how in my stories! ••• There are so many good reasons to make your own nut milk! Here are a few of mine; 🥛 You can definitely taste the difference! Homemade almond milk is so much creamier and you can make it taste however you’d like! I like to experiment with different spices like cinnamon, cardamom, & nutmeg, & vanilla beans/extract. 🥛 You avoid all the bad stuff in store bought almond milk. Even though these fillers are probably healthier than dairy milk, I think it’s a good idea to avoid them if possible, especially in products I use regularly, such as nut milk! 🥛Take control of your sugar! For me, sugar seriously triggers breakouts! We don’t think about something as essential as nut milk being sugary, but sadly lots of companies add hidden sugar (both in the form of cane sugar and artificial sweeteners!). I love controlling my sugar intake by using dates, date syrup, and occasionally, maple syrup to sweeten my homemade nut milk. 🥛 Commonly found on store bought nut milk labels is Carrageenan, a “natural” ingredient, separated by just a few pH points from the same carrageenan used in drug trials to induce inflammation (inflammation is the root cause of almost every medical condition & disease!). It is also very hard to digest and has been linked to colorectal & liver cancer! ••• If you’re not sold on making your own nut milk just yet, try making a seed milk that doesn’t require straining! Hemp, pumpkin seed, & sunflower seed milk are simple and foolproof!
Friend; “weekend plans?” Me; “oh you know... just building my smoothie bowl portfolio” 💁🏻♀️👩🏻🍳📸 ••• Veggie smoothies don’t have to be savory! This kobocha squash one from @leefromamerica was the perfect satisfyingly sweet breakfast! ••• But for real, what are your weekend plans??? 🤓
When you love spring even though it hates you... 🙈🌸💔🤧 ••• Send your homeopathic allergy remedies to this pathetic girl that’s allergic to grass & trees... 🙃🙆🏻♀️ & Happy Friday! 💖 #AllergyFace #HappySpring
