This morning we read the neatest little alphabet book called “¡Bienvenidos a mi barrio!” (Welcome to my Neighborhood) by @quiaraalegria . We talked about how the neighborhood in the story was similar and different from our own, and how both were filled with wonderful people called our neighbors. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a way to give a small token of thanks to our one-of-a-kind neighbors this week, we whipped up these Salted Caramel Pumpkin Spice Collagen Balls from @lichenpaleolovingaip to share. Lately I’ve been working really hard to prioritize my sleep. While we sleep not only are we giving our bodies much needed rest, but also ample time to do things like muscle repair, memory consolidation, hormone balancing and more. Thus, depriving ourselves of sufficient rest night after night can have some pretty detrimental effects over time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As moms of little ones, there are often circumstances out of our control that can affect our sleep each night. But there are things that I have been learning that I can do and implement to ensure I’m doing my best to set myself up for success. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For starters, I’m trying to stay away from bright lights immediately before bed. In particular, those from my computer and cell phone, as blue light is the worst for promoting rest. Our pineal gland which produces melatonin and helps regulate our sleep cycle is triggered by darkness. So while ideally we should stay away from bright lights 1-2 hours before bed, it’s imperative that at the very least we aren’t staring into them while there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other things I am working to incorporate lately: * Not doing “brain work” 1-2 hours before bed, but instead relaxing or completing mindless tasks. * Not drinking large quantities of liquid before bed so I don’t have to get up so frequently to head to the bathroom. * Instilling a “calm down” routine just as I do for my little guy. For this, I have enjoyed things like foot soaks, hot tea, diffusing relaxation promoting oils and yoga Nidra lately. * Taking supplements like 5-HTP and Magnesium Glycinate to relax my mind, nerves etc prior to hitting the hay. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are some things you do to help wind down from the day and promote a restful night’s sleep?
It’s hard to believe my now thirty pound two-year-old was once this small. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My little Ash-man, you took us on quite the adventure when you decided to enter this world at 34 weeks gestation, and you haven’t stopped since. Your zest for life is contagious, and our world has only been brighter since you entered it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m so grateful to all of the people who have had an impact on this preemie of ours making the strides he has these past two years. From the delivery team and NICU nurses who ensured we were both safe and who taught Ryan and I how to navigate the first steps of new parenthood. To our surgical team that calmed our nerves and skillfully repaired his hernias at three months of age. To the early childhood specialists and our OT who have answered our questions, gave us suggestions and guided Asher to finally taking his first precious steps. And to our friends and family who have loved on us and our little boy since the start of this wild ride- thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We wouldn’t be where we are today without each and every one of you along the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today is World Prematurity Day. And as a preemie parent, I know that even the littlest of gestures can make a big difference. This morning as part of our lessons in gratitude we gave thanks for books and celebrated them in style with our very own “Book Fiesta”. Asher indulged while we read all about the real and imaginary places the pages of our books can take us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After our snack we headed off to the library to continue the party where we got to search for new stories, play and relax with a book in hand on their big, comfy chairs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Special thanks to @ellieandpiperco for gifting us these adorable decorations for our fiesta. “I am different”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the phrase I picked off the list my counselor shared with me months back to express why I felt my anxiety ramped up around health issues. This is the icky feeling that rears it’s head now and again as I continue to navigate the unknowns going on inside my body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These past few months have been hard all. From weird symptoms like dizziness, tingling, and insomnia cropping up now and again to these last few weeks where my body doesn’t want to seem to digest any sort of food, it’s been beyond exhausting to say the least. Not only that, but it’s stirring up all the feels I’d rather not tap into from my past health experiences. Those times that I felt like my body betrayed me before. Those times it didn’t act like it was “supposed” to. And those times I labeled myself as “different” from the rest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yesterday I went to visit my NP for a follow up appointment and to run some more lab work. During our time together I rattled off the list of all of my thoughts and concerns along with all the things I am working to do to support my body. Before she left the room, she turned to me, gave me a hug and uttered the simplest of words that I’m doing my darndest to hold on to in these moments- “You’re doing a great job”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So to any of you out there today that feel like despite your best efforts, your body just seems to have a mind of it’s own, I’m here to tell you the same- “You are doing a great job”. And if you feel those feelings of “I’m different” crop up, as they have for me more times than I can count, just remind yourself that we all are. And because of that every one of our health, healing and even life’s journeys are as well. And while these unknowns and struggles can feel disheartening and even isolating at times, just know you aren’t alone. Sending hugs, prayers and love to each one of you today whatever you may be facing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We started decorating for the holidays yesterday, and it’s “beginning to look a lot more like Christmas” around here. Asher was so excited to take the tree out of the box, all the while chanting “ho ho” 🎅 is coming as we put it together. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Both my husband and I grew up in Illinois, so for us, that’s where so many of our own Christmas memories were made. But Asher is a born and raised Minnesota dude, and as he grows it’s been so fun for us to start creating new memories alongside him as a family in our new(ish) home and cities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To add some additional festive flair to our living room we spruced up our new map of our favorite cities gifted to us from @mapiful with a spritz of garland yesterday too. Oh, and did I mention my husband and I made the frame ourselves for under $5?
