soooo WHEN exactly should we plan for our lifestyle newborn session? great question. so glad you asked! 😉 most of my clients like to do their maternity session at around the 7 month mark, and the lifestyle newborn session when the little one is about 1 month old. it works for a few reasons: ONE: the fam is finding their groove. TWO: mom feels a little more like herself. THREE: babe is cuuuuute, but still super sleepy and super small. shoot me a DM or send me an email if you're interested in making plans for a session like this in 2020! xo

wedding photography mindset for the week: plan moments, not photos. my fave tip of all for my sweet clients during their planning season, is to surrender the need to plan your photos. instead, plan the way you want to feel. to celebrate. to really ENJOY the day of your dreams. beautiful photos will find you when you focus on the feeling, not the shot. promise!!

someone actually emailed me to say it would do my business good to advertise that I offer maternity, lifestyle newborn, and branding photography. mmm, k thanks DAVE, but have you ever thought maybe it was intentional to have those services left off my wedding photography site? the truth is, my calendar would be booked solid if I advertised these lifestyle photo sessions. so much so, that it would negatively impact the attention I'm able to offer to my wedding clients, and it would severely impact the second business I'm busy growing at @laurakelly.co. so here's the skinny, DAVE: I accept only a handful of lifestyle sessions every season. my favourites include maternity photos (like this gorge shot featuring my 2015 bride and groom, michelle and andy), lifestyle newborn, anniversary, and small business branding photography. I have a couple spots left for sunset summer sessions, and would recommend you hop on it quick if you've been mulling it over! shoot me a note through my website, or by email at laura[at]laurakellyphotography.ca. unless you're dave. in which case, I don't particularly want to help you document the installation of your new basement man cave.
ever wonder what your favourite luxury wedding photographer has been up to during quarantine? well hopefully you're already connected with me over on @laurakelly.co, so much of this won't come as a surprise -- but here's a roundup of life these days: ✔️ we taught our kids to ride their bikes without training wheels! big parenting moment, and only one minor fall! 🤸🏼 ✔️ we've finally made a decision for our kitchen reno, and an order has been placed for new cabinet doors (plus cabinet refacing.) some of you might remember I painted our kitchen when we moved into our glebe home a few years ago. exciting changes coming soon ❕ ✔️ it only took 13 weeks to get bored of drinking our nespresso coffee that we love... so we've been playing around with pour over coffee. it feels very vintage and old school, and makes me feel like I'm living in a @mattdavella youtube video. I like it. ☕ ✔️ I did a soft launch of my new online course for small business owners (it's called SPIT IT OUT: efficient writing that sells) and it went SO well! now I'm gearing up for a full launch in july! 📣 ✔️ aaaand last but not least, I somehow convinced my three best friends to buy the supplies for watercolour painting and we had a paint nite on zoom ft. peonies and red wine. so fun, 10/10 recommend friend group peer pressure. ps. I still have a few spaces for sunset engagement sessions in 2020, both summer and fall! if you'd like to see the calendar of availability, send me an email here: laura[at]laurakellyphotography.ca ✌🏻
I'm 99% sure it was 2013. it was a pivotal year in my business, featuring some really key weddings that changed the game for me (you know who you are) -- all leading up to a purposeful rebrand. I'm 99% sure that it was in 2013 when I first used the phrase: luxury wedding photography for happy people. BAM. just like that, I had stumbled into my niche. happy people are my jam. (for lack of a better term, even though I actually despise jam. I blame it on a nurse who crushed up a pill into some strawberry jam on a cracker when I was young and hospitalized for an asthma attack. cuuuute story, moving on.) if you're reading this and you're a happy bride-to-be, I can't wait to meet you and help you document your perfect day, if you're reading this and you're a business owner, yet to find that niche of yours that feels like coming home -- keep looking. you'll know it's right when you find it, but it takes time! florals: @harmonyflorals bride's dress: @lamourbycallablanche from @sindersbridalhouse groom's suit: @suitsupply DJ: @dynamixproductions
I don't know about you, but I'm livingggg for every little announcement about things that are opening back up, every whisper of the number of people that are allowed to gather... I'm sure you caught the news this week that groups of 50 could gather for weddings outdoors! I'm breathing a sigh of relief for all my clients for fall 2020 who have held onto the hope of their smaller, reimagined wedding celebrations. I've got a little pep in my step this week! 🤩 you feel it too? #laurakellyweddings #ottawawedding #ottawaweddings #ottawaweddingphotographer #ottawaweddingphotography
first socially distanced maternity session in the books! if this were a year ago, this caption would have made no sense. 💛 (also, if I’ve realized one thing here it’s that I typically touch my client’s hair A LOTTTTT.) #ottawamaternity #ottawamaternityphotographer #ottawamaternityphotos #ottawaphotographer #maternityphotoshoot #ottawamaternitysession
today would have been their wedding day. the dresses would have been hung up on the highest window ledge, the champagne bucket set aside and the perfect bottle chilling in the fridge. julia would be dancing her way through the morning jitters, a mix of calm, cool, collected, and totally freaking out with excitement. will and his guys would have been pulling up a youtube video to figure out how to fold their pocket squares, or maybe flipping through julia's detailed notes to figure out where they needed to be next. the flowers would have been stunning. the ceremony would have been touching, heartfelt, and romantic. the mood, perfection. today would have been their wedding day. this is the first of many saturdays at home that were supposed to look completely different. I have mixed emotions about it. on the one hand, we've got BIG plans for 2021. on the other, I miss our old plans. to my sweet sweet couple, julia and will, let's keep dancing our way through life together for one more year, shall we? xoxo
real footage of ry and I watching from the window while our uber eats is delivered 🤤 (ps this is supposed to be engagement season. I'm eating my feelings and it tastes like thai express.)
this one's for all the wedding professionals who wonder what they're gonna do all year: ... ... actually, I don't know either. so I guess I'll just say you're doing great! keep it up! thinking of you! you got this! (and other motivational stuff that I can't think of right now. k xoxo bye)
