Matt (@papa_pukka) here. The other night a few people asked what I do while Anna is leading the charge for flexible working, nourishing this barnacle and offering tales of woe from high street changing rooms. Mostly I'm trying to work flexibly (my day job is content strategy). I've been freelance most of my working life, because it gives me a bit more say over when I come and go and I really like the mugs at home. I try and stick to a four day week, plus evenings if needed, so I'm clear to spend at least one weekday with the girls. I do about 30% of school runs, but in the past that was strictly 50/50. The difference now is that school finishes at 3.30, while daycare ran until 6. It doesn't always work and I'm guilty of pushing a swing with one hand and answering emails with the other. Anna does more with Eve (the pic is from the summer) but mostly that's because she won't take a bottle and Anna has the magical orbs of infant pacification. I yearn to get back to the girls at the end of the day but I'm also secretly very happy to go to work most mornings too and escape the bleating offspring. There's no perfect balance, but you try and strike the right line between earning, staying sane and being there to pull funny faces and cajole tooth brushing. So all power to you, however you make it work.
Matt (@papa_pukka) here: after vigorous and detailed research, I have established how often men cry during different phases of their lives. These are the #facts #feelings #parentingtheshitoutoflife
This is Matt (@papa_pukka), stepping in to Anna's slightly snow-dampened shoes for a few days (the yoof call it a takeover). I keep hiding her phone while she has a short break, but she'll be back here soon. In the meantime: ask me about anything you fancy - my view on ads, having the kids online, what I do while Anna's fighting for #flexappeal, what it's like being an Instagram widower, money, tips on eyebrow maintenance. I'll be on this thread all night, and looking after the account for a few days, posting in Anna's place to keep her digital seat warm, parp on about flexible working and generally trying not to ruin all her hard work.
Happy Mother’s Day eve. I’m going to be stepping back from here for a bit just to regroup a little. To all the people who understandably messaged to say I may have tarnished the Hello Star Mum awards for those incredible women by pulling out, I hope you know how equally broken I am about it. They deserve all the praise they get and have been the one group most overlooked in the discussions of the last week or so. This has been a tipping point and a realisation - that I have knickers, they are in a twist and I need to take some time to untangle them. A bit of time to get back to my point: to make people laugh more than they cry when they find themselves dangling a constipated toddler over one of those rank aluminium train toilet pans. Happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow lovely people and see you again soon ❤️ 📷 @emilygrayphoto
For anyone wondering what the chuff #flexappeal is and why it matters, there’s a new blog post (penned by @papa_pukka’s sceptical alter-ego) in my bio #flexibleworking #productivity #overbumsonseatsmentality #challengethestatusquo #motherpukka graphic @marieryyoung
