#TuesdayYogaTips: #Boundstandingsplit This new-ish variation of #standingsplit is a hybrid of binding and the pose itself. It deepens the forward fold, stretches the quads, and certainly challenges balance. I had to futz with it to find this entry point. As always, be warm, be playful, and be on a soft mat when trying new balances. [ ☝️Don’t forget you can hit the hashtags below to see insta pics of the warm up poses & old tutorials from me.] 👉🏽First, warm up to a standing split with your hands wide and with the fingers pointing back. 👉🏽 Add some quad lengthening asanas, like #twistedmonkey, #virasana, or the simple runner’s stretch I show here. 👉🏽Practice your bind. Practitioners love to bind in #sideanglepose - which is good, but the #lizardpose bind often called “airplane” is more akin to this asana. [check out my tutorial for #airplanepose to get there.] 👉🏽 From standing split, step back into short lunge with you back heel down for stability. 👉🏽Use your hand behind the standing shin to nuzzle the shoulder behind the shin. 👉🏽 Plant your hands wide again, and hop your heal to your seat. 👉🏽 Bend the standing knee a touch, giving you a chance to hold the foot with the bound hand. You free hand should stabilize you. 👉🏽Slowly point the bent knee UP, while turning your gaze in the opposite direction. 👉🏽 Enjoy the view! 🌅
#repost from @hallehomegirl & I’ll say this much: Increasing your self-worth will save you a ton of mental energy. There’s only so many fu$&s. Why give a f$&k what other people think of you? 🤓 #selfworth = #selfcare
“The temple bell stops but I still hear the sound coming out of the flowers.” - Matsuo Basho 🌸🌸🌸 #SacredSunday #everythingisholy
#noad here - just a yogi kicking back in a formal & contemplating consumerism & #ecoconciousness at Christmastime! I can't say I'm the girliest of girls, but I do love a good frock. This first foray into #renttherunway was a smashing success, and a gift certificate there could be a fantastic gift for the fashionista in your life. (just sayin'). Then there's the #Kindle...endless access to the stories I love, without cutting down one tree. Sometimes I imagine how excited my nine-year old self would be to have a book that lit up - instead of having to use a flashlight under the covers to read late into the night. Come to think of it, she loved playing dress-up too. - That kid must be feeling pretty #extra today. 👗 *** *** *** #yogagift #ecogift #ecogiftideas #ayurveda #manolos #yogachallenge #heartopener #yogadaily #yogainspiration #yogacommunity #yogaforlife #mayyoubebalanced #yogapractice #ayearofyoga2018 #yogaoffthemat #yogachick #lifeofayogi #read #books
...By way of @antidietriotclub by way of @folkrebellion by way of #awesome. 👍 ...Subbing for @kiley.holliday @ 1p in the hotbox @pureyoganyc East today. Come get your shit together fer real.
🎂 Happy 10th year anniversary, @pureyoganyc. It’s been an amazing journey to grow with you for a decade - expanding the #yogatherapy trainings, and evolving with some of the coolest students in this pretty cool town. 📿 After coming from a small studio years ago, I felt it was up to the teachers to “hold the space” - to teach with authenticity and devotion. 🔮 Looking back, it was the space that often held me. Teaching has given my life deep value and meaning, and was a harbor for me in the most tempestuous years of my life. 🧐 Maturing is VERY underrated - it brings with it knowledge, perspective, patience and love - if you continue to look for these qualities, you can cultivate them in yourself. I’ll be with you in spirit, East Side, as I teach the Slow Flow 5p at West. 🎉 Let the celebrat-en begin!
🦂 #Tuesdayyogatips: #Chargingscorpion Looking for a way to open up your shoulders, spice up your #forearmstand , & strengthen your core? This sequence has got all the goods. To first jump into forearm stand, try separating your knees as I demo here (Why? It’s much more doable). 👀 Once you’ve established your balance, begin to transfer your gaze through your arms. It’s gonna feel like it’s a huge change. It’s not - but go slowly enough that the rest of your body can calibrate that change. 🦌 Then, start to “stag” your legs, bending one knee while you slowly, simultaneously lengthen the other leg behind you. Slowly, slowly switch to the non dominant side. 🦂 The next challenge is to bring both your legs behind you. Start with bent legs, and then extend. In my body, my lower back feels better when the legs are apart. Engage your glutes - think of hugging in the outer glutes in particular- to help bear the weight of your legs in transition. Deep backbends like this can let off a lot of steam - let your scorpion charge at things, so you don’t!
🎉 Happy Holiday Party Season Everybody! 🎄 I first came across this quote when I was a teen, and it was just the dose of reality I needed. Even though I feel comfortable in front of people, and always have been, I’m actually quite the closet introvert. 🎄 As a preacher’s kid, I was always held up to a higher level of scrutiny. I had to be well-behaved, well-dressed, and on my best behavior. Not only could I be punished like any kid, but it was inferred to me from a very early age that my family could suffer if I misbehaved. 🎄 This honest misunderstanding predisposed me to social anxiety, and it’s been quite a learning curve to be comfy in my own skin in different situations. 🎉This party season, I’ve enjoyed reminding myself of this old quote - remembering that we all have these anxious moments in common, and that the best part of socializing is remembering you’re not alone.
