  • The Ebony Anglers are a competitive deep-sea fishing team composed of Black women that won the first tournament they entered. I spent some time with these inspirational women back in October for a story I pitched and photographed for The New York Times - this is my favorite image from the project. Thanks to @giachevelle, @bobbiette and all the @ebonyanglers for being so welcoming and helping us tell your story. And thanks to my old friend @whitsittphoto for connecting us! #fishing #ebonyanglers #kingmackerel

  • In September I got to take a break from coronavirus/election coverage and spend a couple hours making portraits of soprano Alicia Russell in Charlotte for TriDelta’s alumni magazine. It’s been a long time since I’ve collaborated with someone as comfortable and at home in front of the camera as Alicia, and she gamely played along as we tried out several different locations, poses and outfits. Most of the pictures showcase Alicia’s ebullient personality, but the quiet strength in this one made it my favorite from the session. As the sun set and Alicia’s dinner plans loomed, we found this little sliver of sodium light in front of a giant air vent in an alley in downtown Charlotte. As luck would have it, the streetlight clicked off seconds after this picture came together. #portraiture #opera #serendipity

  • Another outtake from Robeson County, where, as in other parts of rural America, internet connectivity is a major issue and students and teachers are struggling with virtual learning. Idle school buses are seen as the sun rises at a Robeson County Public Schools facility in Lumberton, North Carolina. Two hundred and one buses remain unused on the lot, while thirty-nine buses have been fitted with WiFi hotspots and are providing internet at various locations throughout the county. Twenty additional buses are being used to distribute food. Link to story in profile. #connectivity #virtuallearning #ruralamerica

  • In America, we promise children a free public education, but we don't promise them access to the internet. I went to Robeson County, NC, where at least 43% of homes don't have an internet connection, to photograph educators' attempts to connect with their students for virtual learning during the pandemic. In this outtake Alexis Hinson (right), 16, virtually attends a class in a relative’s trailer, where she often travels to use the Internet - her own home has no connectivity. Pitched and photographed for The New York Times - link in profile. #connectivity #virtuallearning #ruralamerica

  • Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIII started last night, virtually. Sad not to be there in person with our students on the Yellow Team, but I’ve been blown away so far by the online experience. I’m going to supplement that by sharing some memories here and in my stories. This image is from 2007, Workshop XX - Nick Ut and August Adams before Sunday’s annual memorial. #eaw33 #eddieadams #eddieadamsworkshop
