Repost from @fluxhawaii: “Hawaiʻi was trained to buy food,” Bobby Farias, co-founder of @kunoacattle says, referring to mainland imports. Imported food shipped to the islands in bulk increases its monopoly on #local diets via higher convenience and lower costs. “That’s what Kunoa fights the most out of everything. For the past four years, Farias has operated the Kunoa Cattle Company on this historic acreage in #Kauai. In 2004, after the area was taken over with wild guinea grass—the kind Farias knew would produce world-class beef—he leased its most fallow parcels. On them, he raised #cattle. He shipped them off to mainland buyers for grain or corn finishing and then slaughter, a model that proved to be “a double-edged sword,” he says—cattle kept the land clear and productive, but the export model kept the islands dependent on mainland beef it could clearly produce itself. In 2014, after taking over a slaughterhouse on #Oahu's ʻEwa plains, @kunoacattle was born. Photographer @siahpatterson spent the day documenting the ranch's mission to keep Hawaiʻi beef in Hawaiʻi for the current #FLUXFood issue, tracing its production from Kauaʻi to Oʻahu. Read the full story on how Farias hopes to steer a greater allegiance toward #locavorism at the link in our bio.”
