Director Siu Pham visits Second Opinion and talks to Linh. Many thanks to Manzi team especially Tram Vu for letting us show these (slightly troublesome) works, anh Tuan for helping with the installation and those who put effort on the slightest details that make an exhibition run smoothly. For me revisiting my first personal project has been an interesting experience. While taking these pictures, I was immersed in the process and could not care less about constructing a visual story. It was never a conscious attempt to make art, or to comment on grand concepts like queerness and feminism. I knew I needed to make something, so I turned to what was most readily available - the ebbs and flows of my current relationship. There is no tricks to these images and no correct way to read them. Just emotions laid bare. Two years from then, I am able to relatively detach myself from the work, look at it from the view of an outsider, and articulate my thoughts on it without feeling all messed up. And I can’t forget to say, this work is as much Linh’s as it is mine. Quite a few visitors have taken pictures of this work - I am curious to know why - but I hope seeing a personal visualization of love and loss gives you something to bring home with. Meanwhile, the show is on til January 2019 - take your chance to see fresh photography from Hanoi.
‘This is a slightly truthful, slightly fantastical diary that is open to the public. These are captured moments of craving, clinging, confronting and pushing away, which rely on the camera sensor as a safe box, but meanings slip once the person is not present’. - From The Mirror, part of Second Opinion group exhibition at @manzihn from December 7.
Hội chẩn/ Second opinion - new photography from Hanoi. 8 photographers’ examination of their own life and time. Manzi art space, 7 December 2018 - 7 January 2019.
