New across the desk @TimeforWhisky - @ardbeg Grooves Committee Edition! ☮️✌🏼🥃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As most whisky fans would've heard by now (and as we hinted at many months ago over on Facebook), Grooves is this year's Ardbeg Day release, as part of Ardbeg's Peat & Love celebrations on this year's Ardbeg Day (2nd June).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Peanut brittle, caramel popcorn, cinnamon and soot from a bonfire smoke were @hendyo's notes - a delicious combination from the heavily charred and grooved ex-red wine casks used for this year's release (another innovation from the good Dr Bill)!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This went on sale this week to committee members (for $150AUD in Australia) and the allocation was no doubt quickly snapped up. We managed to grab some - did you? I’ll always take the opportunity to try a new @lagavulinwhisky when I can...like this distillery exclusive Laga bottled in 2017, found at Tokyo’s The Mash Tun last year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 16yo, but matured in Moscatel casks. I found it to be a trademark Laga, but with some fairly prominent sweet overtones that make a marked departure from the 16yo we all know and love. The 54.1% ABV provides a nice balance and didn’t seem to need water. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Same same, but different. 😀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ PS: For more awesome Laga posts, check out @matthewjryan8137. How awesome is this label?! (Even if it does have the word Scotch misspelt... 😆). - A 27yo Burnside, matured in a sherry hogshead (look at that natural colour!) - Burnside, in case you're wondering, is basically Balvenie with a very small amount of Glenfiddich thrown in (they call it “teaspooning”, but I’m told it’s a few litres). The opposite, if anyone’s wondering, is called “Wardhead”! 🤓 - So it’s blended malt that is basically ~99% Balvenie. Gotta say, we don't mind a blend here at TimeforWhisky...especially when it's something like this Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare. Bottled at 46%, the Ghost and Rare are more than just hyperbole - they refer to the use of whisky from three closed distilleries - Cambus (Grain), Pittyvaich (Malt), and a large serving of the legendary Brora (Malt). - Anything with a core of Brora is OK by us, and this is no exception. @hendyo was fortunate enough to sit down with this recently, and will have his thoughts up on the blog (link in bio) soon. - Are there any blends you particularly like?
You've gotta hand it to @suntorywhisky - they sure know how to make beautiful packaging. Thankfully, they're also pretty good at making the liquid inside decent, too. 😉 - Loved the nose on this one. Palate was nice too, although not quite up there with the nose if you ask me. Still a great dram though, and a fun follow-up to the NAS Mizunara releases of years gone by (full tasting notes are up on the blog). - Having tried Mizunara-aged or finished whiskies from 3 Scotch producers (2 single malts, 1 blend) and a handful of Japanese distilleries, I personally love the unique coconut, sandalwood notes it often gives. This 1977 40yo Rare Cask Collection has been bottled exclusively for Heinemann Duty Free and is available from Sydney and Kuala Lumpur airports. - Bottled from a single cask (no.15176) chosen by Brian Kinsman after 40 years, the whisky is selling for $4,352AUD, and is limited to 150 bottles. - ...so how does it taste? I’ve been on a bit of a buying spree of late, of very particular bottles - namely, those bottled for bars (@clubqing, @ribbon2006 aka The Mash Tun Tokyo, @thedrunkenmaster_bar_owner and @theelysianwhiskybar mostly). - That might seem a bit odd, but I figure these are some of the best whisky bars in the world, so their cask selections are going to be 👌🏼 (and I haven’t been disappointed yet). - Plus, the people behind these bars are all legends, so it’s a privilege to be able to have a piece of their bar in my home. - As I get to the end of a deliciously dark sherried 19yo @theglenrothes bottled for 6 bars (Mash Tun Tokyo, Elysian Whisky Bar Melbourne, Drunken Master Bar Kaohsiung, Inn Bistro, Bar Caprice and Still Fun), I’ll be opening this next - a 27yo Cragganmore bottled for both Club Qing and The Mash Tun Tokyo. I tried it when it was released, and it was delicious, so there are some tasty times ahead. 🥃👍🏼 - (and yes, it has cats all over the label, of course 😆).
Another old Miniature - this time Longmorn-Glenlivet Pure Malt 12yo. In more recent terminology, that might suggested a blended malt with both Longmorn and Glenlivet, but not in this case - back in the day a number of distilleries had -Glenlivet appended to their name, and Pure Malt was often used to describe single malt. So this is a 12yo Longmorn single malt. - I don't even want to guess when it was bottled, but definitely pre-1980 (as the UK switched to ABV% in Jan 1980), which means the spirit was distilled in the 1960s or earlier. A bit of Googling suggests maybe an early 1970s bottling, so possibly even 1950s spirit?! - Either way - I know when it was opened. Last night! Talk about a mixed bag - freshly cut grass, coconut cream, blueberries, and lots of pine. Weird, fun and incredibly different to today's Longmorns (even accounting for the slight hints of OBE, or Old Bottle Effect).
A deliciously sherried 16yo Glen Elgin, bottled by United Distillers as part of The Manager's Dram series. - As the name suggests, the series involved casks chosen by the distillery managers (and generally only available to friends and family of distillery workers), and covered a number of distilleries. I've been lucky enough to try a few (but not the elusive Caol Ila, which I saw selling for almost double Black Bowmore at a bar in Japan recently! 😳) and they've all been fantastic. - Not cheap nowadays, but it was a pleasure to try this bottle from @clubqing, poured by @kinsan_54 at Hong Kong Whisky Live 2017 (hosted by @whiskymaghk). - If you ever get the chance to try a bottle (any bottle from The Manager's Dram series, I suggest you do, because the manager's didn't pick the dregs, and these bottles are only becoming more and more scarce!
