• The time I spent in 2016 in an off-grid cabin has been in my thoughts recently – contemplating these two experiences of isolation. One @montellofoundation in Nevada’s Great Basin, arriving in to a different landscape, with no remote link to others, in a way that felt both extreme and brutal. And now, somehow escaping into our regular environments, underlined with unease. Both share a strange bereft experience of being without any direct connection to other people, though one was, in many ways, without technology, and this one completely with it. They both create different spaces for contemplation and necessities for making artwork; they both form a space to think about processes of why I make things and how I make things, and they create a point to pause and reflect. The impact of the 2016 residency filtered into things for a long time afterwards, it makes we wonder what shifts will take place beyond now.

Main Corridor, Whipps Cross Hospital, London.

In 2019 I was an Artist-in-Residence for Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture @wfculture19 which ended with this permanent installation in Whipps Cross Hospital in East London along the main public corridor of the hospital.
The artwork considers the legacy of the Borough and took inspiration from the ‘magic lantern’ slides discovered in the Epping Forest and Vestry Museum archives. It includes drawn and photographic images of local flora and fauna. Covering glazed sections of the corridor, the transparency of the square window panes recreates a sense of the 19th century tradition of images on glass used in early photography. The hope was to encourage visitors to look up and out through the windows, making a possible connection with the restorative forest that lays on the edge of the hospital’s premises.

Live experiments.
@algaegrrrl and I have been working together in the UCL Biochemistry labs to see if this algae will decolorise the azo dyed fabric it grows on. This idea emerged from @algaegrrrl ‘s past research in India when algae was used to cleanse heavy metals from contaminated wastewater running from artisanal workshops. @rawatdeepak25 help us a great deal by sharing his research on bacteria decolorising azo dyes.

Looking at the intersection between past technologies and current infrastructure, this new work thinks about the similarities between clay and code- connected in similarly advancing the technologies of their equivalent time period. Roman clay pots and artefacts from the collections of Colchester and Ipswich Museums are displayed among new replicas, while algae has been used to dye fabric drapes and to set up live experiments within the galleries, all framed within an installation of sculpture, textile, moving image and sound. 
The title of the exhibition is derived from Shannon Mattern’s book Code and Clay, Data and Dirt: Five Thousand Years of Urban Media, which suggests that clay and code are connected in similarly advancing the technologies of their equivalent time periods. 
The exhibition is supported by The Elephant Trust.

  • This Friday 19 July my solo show ‘Code Clay, Data Dirt’ @firstsitecolchester opens.
Looking at the intersection between past technologies and current infrastructure, this new work thinks about the similarities between clay and code- connected in similarly advancing the technologies of their equivalent time period. Roman clay pots and artefacts from the collections of Colchester and Ipswich Museums are displayed among new replicas, while algae has been used to dye fabric drapes and to set up live experiments within the galleries, all framed within an installation of sculpture, textile, moving image and sound. The exhibition is supported by The Elephant Trust.

Also opening on Friday as part of the Summer Exhibitions: Opening Celebration are solo shows by Mark Titchner and Siobhan Coen

  • In 2016 I had the privilege of being an Artist-in-Residence at the Montello Foundation’s retreat in the in an isolated valley in the Northeastern corner of Nevada, in what is known as the Sagebrush Desert. @montellofoundation 
The Montello Foundation is now expanding its mission to offer an opportunity for this type of insight and experience to the general public by building a Desert Waypoint. They have a kickstarter ending in 2 days, with many artist prints available!
