It's installation day at Sundaram Tagore Gallery at Gillman Barracks. We're thrilled to be opening an exhibition of powerful new waterfall paintings by Hiroshi Senju. . Titled "Beginnings," the exhibition opens Thursday, Jan. 21, just in time for Singapore Art Week. . Over the past four years, the artist has been engaged in high-profile public projects, including two monumental paintings commissioned to mark the 1,200th anniversary of Kongobuji Temple at Koyasan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a 20.4-meter-wide folding screen at Tokyo’s Haneda airport. . Having finished these large commissions, he returned to his New York studio to complete waterfalls for "Beginnings." . Senju began the creative process for the work in "Beginnings" on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The pristine beauty of Hawaii has inspired Senju’s work in the past, but it was the rugged, almost prehistoric landscape of Oahu’s north side that struck a chord. . “There are places where you can feel the energy of the beginning,” he says. “Here, I can feel the echo, the vibration of the Earth and the energy of Earth’s creation.” . The artist has a profound connection to and love of nature. He has been conveying in paint its power and ability to inspire awe for more than 30 years. . “Generosity is giving more than you can." Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) . الكرم ، هو العطاء فوق مانستطيع ـ جبران "La générosite est de donner plus qu'on ne peut." . #repost @hassanmassoudy . Hassan Massoudy masterfully combines words and images. He creates calligraphic compositions from texts by Eastern and Western poets, authors and philosophers. . Fascinated by ancient and contemporary writing, he often turns to quotes about love, nature and most importantly, humanism. . The Iraqi-born Paris-based artist enlarges a single word from the text and paints it in the center of his composition on paper or canvas using a flat brush or instruments fashioned from wood or cardboard. . Explore the work of Joan Vennum, a New York-based artist with roots in post-abstract expressionism who creates color-flooded paintings that explore spatial environments. . Her canvases are at once abstract and figurative, combining simple forms and intense surface detail. Over a career spanning decades, she has distilled and perfected a technique of applying repeated layers and gradations of color fields to portray the illusion of limitless space, as it appears in her imagination and in the natural world. . Vennum has stated, "My work is built in the way of abstract expressionism in the sense that the process is a discovery, yet my discovery takes place in meditation. Eastern philosophy makes it clear that original ideas can only proceed from a clear place . . . and if I am patient, there will be the moment when I know I have found my way." . Robert Yasuda composes subtly iridescent paintings suffused with color. The Hawaiian-born artist investigates the fugitive qualities of light and perception by layering acrylic paint and sheer, woven fabric atop sculpted wooden panels. He's been exploring themes of perception and light since the early 1970s. . Yasuda builds surfaces that are both ethereal and architectural. His works assume different guises according to changes in light and the viewer's vantage point, demanding, you slow down and look. . Defying the traditional boundaries of painting, Yasuda's seems to float. He carves wooden panels into unusual forms with upturned corners, rounded edges or subtly curved contours. Attaching covert cradle-like wooden structures behind some paintings, he forces the works into space giving them a sculptural quality. . Gallery artist Anila Quayyum Agha's laser-cut lacquered steel sculpture is on view at the Cincinnati Art Museum. . The US-based Pakistani-born artist (b. 1965) is known for her immersive, large-scale light installations. She laser-cuts elaborate patterns into three-dimensional cubes. The lace-like floor-to-ceiling shadows they cast allude to the richly ornamented public spaces such as mosques that Agha was excluded from as a female growing up in Lahore. . Korean artist Chun Kwang Young incorporates elements of painting and sculpture in his practice. He is best known for his Aggregation series: freestanding and wall-hung amalgamations of small forms wrapped in antique mulberry paper, often tinted with teas or pigment. . Chun’s signature technique was inspired by childhood memories of medicinal herbs wrapped in mulberry paper, tied into small packages, hanging from the ceiling of the local doctor’s office. He became intrigued with the idea of merging the techniques, materials and sentiment of his Korean heritage with the conceptual freedom he experienced during his Western education at the Philadelphia College of Art in the 1970s. . The artist's work will be on view in our Chelsea gallery beginning January 14 in our annual winter group show. . Kim Jaeil (born 1969) produces perforated, sculptural paintings cast from resin using his own unique process of intaglio, a centuries-old printing technique. . The Seoul-based artist (@jaeil.k ) begins by sketching a composition on a flat surface. Once finalized, Kim builds a form out of clay in three connected layers, into which he pours resin. Once hardened, he carves the resin structure and applies acrylic paint, producing a mesh of circular pockets illuminated with light-reflecting hues. Each painting can take up to a month to produce. . Kim’s compositions vary. Some are inspired by natural forms such as waves or stars; others are abstract. Kim’s luminous hollows, strung together by an unseen connective tissue, compel the viewer to examine the work closely to discover its hidden depths. For the artist, these mystical spheres encapsulate both the microstructure of human cells and a galaxy of stars across the sky. . This paper work by Neha Vedpathak, the centerpiece of our recent exhibition "Surface Rhythm," is on view at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, N.C. . Vedpathak began her career as a painter, creating minimalist abstract works on canvas, but wanted to move beyond the two-dimensional plane. After experimenting with materials she encountered handmade Japanese paper, which became the focus of her practice. . Using a rigorous technique she calls “plucking” Vedpathak spends hours separating the paper’s fibers with a pushpin. There is a spiritual aspect to her slow and disciplined process, which she likens to meditative chanting tuned to a slower pace. . Vedpathak’s sensuous, tactile constructions seemingly float while casting intricate shadows on the wall. She creates depth with shifts of color and by leaving small areas unplucked, which plays off the transparency of the lace-like effect. .
