Kate Bergin / @kateberginartist The Smart Set, 2021 Oil on canvas 150 x 90 cm Swipe across to see work in its entirity. I recently purchased a tiny book with gold gilt edges. The cover features a sepia photo of a couple blissfully dancing & above them is the gold embossed title, "Tales of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald". It came complete with a blue satin ribbon to mark your page. Obviously I buy books for their sheer beauty! But when I opened it there was a section titled, "The Author's Table of Contents" which I've never seen before. Here Fitzgerald writes a little memory of each of the short stories in the book. It's absolutely wonderful. For "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" Fitzgerald recalls “a startling letter from an anonymous admirer in Cincinnati”… 'Sir - I have read the story of Benjamin Button in Colliers & I wish to say that as a short story writer you would make a good lunatic...’. But what has any of this to do with this painting? Well, most of the stories in this little book were first published in the New York literary magazine, "The Smart Set”. One of them is "Porcelain & Pink" and Fitzgerald remembers a meeting with another "admirer"... "And do you write for any other magazines?" enquired the young lady. "Oh, yes", I assured her, "I've had some stories & plays in "The Smart Set", for instance..." The young lady shivered. "The Smart Set!" she exclaimed. "How could you? They publish stuff about girls in bathtubs & silly things like that." And I had the magnificent joy of telling her that she was referring to "Porcelain & Pink" which had appeared there several months before.” And now I have the "magnificent joy" of calling this painting, "The Smart Set". With an owl sitting on top of a pink flamingo emanating much wisdom in its unusual surroundings it seemed fitting but perhaps I should consider the possibility of including a porcelain bathtub next time!" - Kate Bergin (Feb, 2021) #ScottLiveseyGalleries
