Been playing the role of lifeguard more and more these days. In between breaking up some pool shenanigans I have been working on building my crochet skills and reading. I am having some terrible carpal tunnel with this pregnancy (a long ago severe double wrist injury is an issue that comes and goes but really hits in pregnancy) which has greatly limited my ability to knit. So far crocheting has been less painful for me. I’m working on a dish scrubby. I am using Red Heart scrubby sparkle in Lemon yellow and Yarn Bee Scrub-ology Scrub It in Lime. Held together this makes for a durable scrubby. Oh! And I am growing Stevia! I clipped a sprig today. I’ll give it a try in my iced tea. So far the book, it’s tremendous. #summerdays #thisandthat #crochet #steviaplant
Summer evenings by the pool require an extra large sammichin’ for supper. Start with your favorite large bread. We used a whole wheat Italian loaf from the local grocery store bakery. For ours we layered provolone with cold cuts of roast beef, turkey, ham, and salami. Then added all the veggies: thinly sliced cucumbers, green bell peppers, and tomatoes. Add some shredded carrot and lettuce and you’re set. We sliced it up and let everyone decide on their favorite condiments. I like mine with a little bit of mayo and some Italian vinaigrette. #eatyourveggies #mongosandwich #sandwichsupper #summersupper
Today marks another year in the books for us. All those 20! Years ago on our wedding weekend there was a wildfire burning in Northern Colorado. (Not to mention our cancelled flights and a desperate need to take up the offer to spend the night with family in Dallas) The skies were an eerie yellow hazy color. Not yet ideal to say the least. We worried about how our plans for pictures and just about the whole ceremony would be affected. Temperatures dropped and our Rehearsal dinner was a night of laughter because suddenly everyone needed coats! We woke on our Wedding day to cold, heavy rain all morning long. The rain put out the fire which washed the skies clean. It turned into a picture perfect, beautiful sunny Colorado day. The Wedding Mass was beautiful. Jubilant and ready to celebrate we had to delay our arrival to the reception due to a broken down limousine. While there we enjoyed ourselves with family and friends forgetting about the crazy obstacles we encountered. Some may even say our Wedding day and weekend was far from “perfect” but it wasn’t at all. It was absolutely the most perfect lesson we could have asked for on the very day we stood together and made that covenant. The lesson of overcoming obstacles and still standing right there together and having the courage to take it on and even smile (or laugh) about it all. That is marriage. This is our marriage and we’re in it together for life.
Been spending more time playing in the dirt. I have a lot on my mind and that’s where it stays. We have a lot of walking wounded in the world. So few have been willing to offer enough grace and patience as required in times like these. Our tendency to jump to conclusions or criticism has been detrimental to our potential. I truly hope we can continue to openly share our lives with each other in the ways we see fit. My version is going to be different from your version this is what makes the world an interesting and amazing place. So for now, me and mine, we’re going to go on as we have and open our arms to our friends and family, greet you with a smile, and truly be glad that you are here with us too.
I delight in seeing beautiful peonies brought indoors. #gardenlove #peony
This cake wraps up the official May birthday cake train. The Mister always asks for a carrot cake on his birthday. It’s the same cake I have been making him for dozens of years. Cream cheese frosting, mascarpone whipped cream filling, pecans and plump raisins. The cake request has often left the little kids feeling a little disappointed. They think of cake as being covered in sprinkles and definitely not including things like nuts or dried fruit. Every year they sit staring at the plate pausing before the first bite pondering on the disappointing expectations in their minds. That first bite turns in to many lost in their enjoyment they forget about the sprinkles relishing the simple delight of a well made carrot cake. Sigh. I laugh every year as this repeats itself each May. I also smile as I watch the older girls thoroughly enjoy the cake they once thought was a suspicious dare. These are the stories of our families the pieces of our lives that become circular reminders of the patterns that become tradition. #birthdaycake #carrotcake
This is the time of year where I love to bring in the blooming peonies. Right now one plant has been brave enough to bloom. The others are taking their time. Maybe it’s all this extended cool weather keeping spring holding on just a bit longer. #peonyflower #mantelscape #spring
We have a busy month of birthdays in our house. Sweet Lady O celebrated today with the traditional birthday muffins. We had a parade of friends drop by and distancely (not a word I know) offer their birthday greetings. She enjoyed some pasta for dinner and a birthday cheesecake. Happiest of birthdays to our beautiful daughter Olivia!
