Father’s Day his way...in the sunshine!🌞
Dear Soul Artist, This weekend’s Solstice eclipse marks a powerful moment of sacred marriage, or the reunion of all opposites. ⠀⠀ The sun and moon will appear as one. 🌗 ⠀⠀ I am not an astrologer... But as a Contemplative Mythologist, Deep Psychologist, and Yogini, I celebrate the rich symbolism of this weekend’s stellar events as an invitation to honor the Father archetype. ⠀⠀ Much of my work–study and teaching–draws from the symbolism of esoteric alchemy because these images and rituals are foundational to the mystic spirituality of both Western and Eastern religions. ⠀⠀ This month, in my journal, you will find a call to remember God/dess (which does not, by the way, mean woman). ⠀⠀ It is a Love letter to our fathers–who get knocked down again and again; but who rise again and again–to remember the sacredness in the human experience. ⠀⠀ Let me know if/how this contemplation inspires you. ONE LOVE ⠀⠀ Find it here: https://www.rrshakti.com/soul-artist-journal.html
Happy Juneteenth. ⠀⠀ Meet my sister, Cortnie. She has this amazingly clear, humble, and uncompromised way of explaining what it is. ⠀⠀ We just met 3 years ago: Two Sisters. Similar blood. Two different cultural lenses. ⠀⠀ Watch our last Elephant Conversation about race, relation, & education. ⠀⠀ ...it’s a heartfelt conversation of curiosity, vulnerability, and a deep desire to see collective wholeness. ⠀⠀ Photo @coco_lighthouse ⠀⠀ https://www.innerpoweryoga.org/elephantconversations/two-sisters-cortnie-burriss-rr-shakti-talk-race-relation-and-education #blacklivesmatter #afrohaus #education
Love is a ritual. You live it everyday as an embodied expression of your own Self-knowing. You practice it within the mirror of your loved ones. It is finally confirmed in the face of your perceived “enemies.” ⠀⠀ If you have a hard time experiencing that kind of Love confirmation—in the face of your perceived enemies—start back from the beginning... ⠀⠀ You are worthy. Close your eyes and imagine: how would you hold yourSelf as a baby? ⠀⠀ We’re all just babies, man... learning to be grown-ups in Love.
Just a reminder.
Love is still the answer. ⠀⠀ Let’s not bypass the heart-ache. Let’s not pretend that our black squares and sentiments are enough. Let’s actually go into the darkness—the place of the wound and feel it, so that we can heal it. ⠀⠀ I feel angry. Deeply sad. Afraid. and I don’t want to stop feeling. I don’t want to move “forward” until we can all step together. ⠀⠀ What will make this darkness fruitful? ⠀⠀ Love is still the answer.
“When I look at this young girl, I see the future. A future of justice. Where police officers are held accountable for their actions. Where our nation’s history of systemic racism is confronted. But the future starts with having these difficult conversations about our pain and speaking the truth so we can heal.” —Kamala Harris ⠀⠀ Photo: Dalton Carper Works.

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” —CG Jung ⠀⠀ True healing is not as simple as spiritual transcendence. Healing requires illumination of shadow. We must acknowledge the unconscious wound. At the place of wounding, we find ourselves connected to each other in Love. ⠀⠀ Illuminating the shadow—with courage and compassion—we become whole.
There is a LOVE beyond all opposites. Beyond left and right, black and white, us and them. Beyond conditioned responses. Bigger than our pain. ⠀⠀ Don’t be fooled. Hatred, fear— they are no match for that LOVE. ⠀⠀ The LOVE that remains—unshakably steady, always ready...every moment of every day, forever, asking you inexhaustibly again and again... over and over: “What will you choose? Ignorance? or Freedom?” ⠀⠀ R.I.P George Floyd. Live & Let Live. Love & Let Love. Breathe & Let Breathe. ⠀⠀ Another day. Another prayer for peace. Another prayer that all humans would recognize the sacred life—the precious breath—of all humans. ⠀⠀ This place could be heaven... ⠀⠀ Just Breathe. And let Breathe. I want to share some voices of courage and social change that I learned about today thanks to my friends at BeLove Apparel @beloveapparel: @thegreatunlearn @rachel.cargle @austinchanning @ckyourprivilege @shishi.rose Please use my message feed, below, to share links to people who inspire you to think, learn, and be courageous. Thank you.
Don’t say you are “colorblind.” It is time to open your eyes. Have courage. See color. See people. ⠀⠀ I hope you see my color.
Do you see my color? I hope you do. ⠀⠀ I’m not black. I’m not white. I am full of color. ...and if you don’t see my color, you don’t see me. ⠀⠀ Below the surface, I am just like you. My heart beats and breaks... My gut eats and aches...My lessons land emotionally and wisdom comes gradually. ⠀⠀ But the surface skin...the skin I’m in...it holds it all together. ⠀⠀ I hope you see my color. ⠀⠀ I hope you see the color of that little girl in that small mid-western town...half adopted, half white. The one who wished she was the fair one, the slim one, the “normal” one. ⠀⠀ I hope you see the color of the college freshman girl who sat pulling on her ballet shoes while all the black girls shook their heads ‘cause she didn’t know her heritage. ⠀⠀ ...the color of the Chicago girl, who looked around the “L” one night to realize that—at that moment—everyone on it was dark skinned. ...and they spoke their mind freely...moved their limbs easily because (as far as they could see) there were only black people on that train. ⠀⠀ Look at me. See the color of the woman who met her black family and felt proud to say “I’m black.” ...Ashamed to say “I’m white.” But neither is true. ⠀⠀ Maybe you feel ashamed too. Maybe you feel guilty...or afraid...or proud...or sad...or angry...or confused. ⠀⠀ But don’t say you are “colorblind.” It is time to open your eyes. Have courage. See color. See people.
“Truly, without deception, certain and most true. What is below is like that which is above, and what is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of the one thing. And as all things proceeded from the one, through meditation of the one, so all things come from this one thing through adaptation. Its father is the sun; it’s mother the moon; the wind has carried it in its belly; its nurse is the earth...” (from The Emerald Tablet of Hermès Trismegistus). ⠀⠀ Tonight’s Shiva Moon got me cooking like an alchemist... breathing in, out, and upside down. ⠀⠀ ...imagining absolute reality as both the eternal light and the mirror that reflects it. ⠀⠀ Nature is teaming with divinity and your face is the face of the entire cosmos manifested in this moment to shine. You are a moon beam, darling human. ⠀⠀ Shine.
“Real mystics don’t hide mysteries, they reveal them.” —G. K. Chesterton ⠀⠀ There comes a time when the spiritual seeker returns from her quest to find that the hero was within her all along. ...when the road leads him home to his own hearts wisdom and he remembers his soul as whole. ⠀⠀ There is nothing left to do but play. ⠀⠀ #feelingplayful #returninghome #again&again
“Science is gonna get us out of this, but art is gonna get us through this.” ⠀⠀ —Mo Willems ⠀⠀ You are the artist. Make your life a masterpiece.
Full Lakshmi Moon blessings to you as we celebrate the deep wisdom—creative and healing power—abiding in the rhythms of Nature, abundant within your own heart.
“If we run a hundred miles an hour to the other end of the continent in order to get away from the obstacle, we find the very same problem waiting for us when we arrive. ⠀⠀ It just keeps returning with new names, forms, manifestations until we learn whatever it has to teach us about where we are separating ourselves from reality, how we are pulling back instead of opening up, closing down instead of allowing ourselves to experience fully whatever we encounter, without hesitating or retreating into ourselves.” ⠀⠀ Pema Chodron
Lessons From Uncertainty: ⠀⠀ Be grateful. Worry less. Play more. Do less. Love more. Breathe. ⠀⠀ One of the grittiest lessons to cross my heart again and again, is knowing that human beings are both profoundly powerful and utterly vulnerable. ⠀⠀ We are the Soul Artists. Our lives are composed from the melody of every thought and action. We paint the colors of the universe with our creative vision. ⠀⠀ At the same time, we are wildly susceptible to forces beyond our control. ⠀⠀ Today is uncertain. As I try to figure out what to do…how to prepare…what I can say “for sure...” ⠀⠀ I am faced with the cosmic punchline that every day is uncertain. Be grateful. My entire body speaks as I hold my child: “Every moment is an exquisite gift.” ⠀⠀ Today is no less predictable than was yesterday, last month, or a year ago. Ongoing cycles of transformation–creation and destruction–are the very nature of being. Waves of change course through the human experience with groundless eloquence, like weather patterns of calm and chaos. They cannot be wrangled into rational obedience. Though we try. ⠀⠀ It is the Soul Artist’s way to distinguish the storm from the vastness of sky. –to climb into the stillness at the center of the turning wheel –to listen and to feel –and to be. ⠀⠀ Worry less. Play more. I’m not grasping anymore. No more thrashing about for some semblance of stability. I let my heart be buoyant, surf the current into the flow. That’s where we all go, after all, anyway. ⠀⠀ Do less. Love more. and I find a groundless ground. –a taproot to the infinite whole –a lifeline to a bottomless hope where nothing is ever destroyed, but always, forever, transformed. ⠀⠀ Breathe. There is a certain freedom in surrender.
Yesterday was the day to celebrate women. And today is the day to celebrate women. And tomorrow will be a day to celebrate women... and the day after that... and the day after that... 💫 ⠀⠀ I’m in deep reverence and gratitude for the power of my soul sisters... like this one! ⠀⠀ 💗
Please don’t let a few misogynist producers ruin your experience at the movies. ⠀⠀ Don’t let all those pedophile priests destroy your personal connection to God. ⠀⠀ Don’t allow a divisive political climate blind your unified vision. Don’t allow a few ego-driven “yogis” cast a shadow over your light. ⠀⠀ The teaching is infinitely greater than the teacher: ⠀⠀ You are whole. You are life. You are Love. ⠀⠀ ...and the only guru is within you. Take heart. Take action.

Looking forward to a day when this post will be irrelevant... ⠀⠀ 💫 I’ve been shamed for my big luscious booty ...and for drinking wine in the afternoon. 🍷 ⠀⠀ I’ve been shamed for my confidence and red lipstick ...and for giving reverence to the moon. 🌓 ⠀⠀ I’ve been judged for ordering fish in my sushi and for having a size 10 shoe. ⠀⠀ I’ve been shamed for calling myself Shakti, like it’s a criminal thing to do. (🙏🏼 reverence for my teachers). ⠀⠀ I’ve been condemned for my singing voice, for my partner choice, and for nursing my child for “too long.” I’ve been told that to honor my shadow is just “pagan” and sinful and wrong. I’ve been judged for speaking my heart’s fire, and on this I will never be tamed. ...though I might be misunderstood, even shamed for not being ashamed. ⠀⠀ I just be like Taylor Swift and shake that shit right off. It doesn’t break my stride. It doesn’t piss me off. Really. ⠀⠀ But the thing that makes my heart heavy: those judgements don’t come from men. The one’s who condemn each other are often women “friends.” ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It isn’t really surprising. We’ve been living with shame for so long. Perhaps we don’t know any other way to make ourselves feel strong. You’d think we all would just get it, after centuries of female suppression. It's time to completely abolish all this girl-on-girl oppression. I only bring this up now, to tell you one thing for certain: I will NOT DO THIS TO YOU, my sisters… ⠀⠀ not even behind the curtain. Just know I’m sending you love vibes, and blowing empowerment kisses your way….twice. Because if there is one thing I have realized, it’s that if you win, I win… so let’s play nice. ⠀⠀ FOR MY DAUGHTER (and all my girls). ⠀⠀ I love you! ⠀⠀ #sisterhood #reallifetantra #innerpoweryoga #innerpoweryogis @rrshakti @innerpower.yoga @innerpoweryogis ❤️
I remind myself: I’m not here to be perfect. I’m here to be Love. The more I embrace my imperfection. The more I realize the perfection of Love.
She had already been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer when we asked her: “what would you like your new granddaughter to call you?” ⠀⠀ She thought for a moment, looking skyward for inspiration. ⠀⠀ “I’ll be ‘Grandma-I-Love-You’” she made the decree...”that way every time she says my name, she’ll remember how much I love her.” ⠀⠀ “Clever,” I laughed, “but you do realize that when she calls you ‘Grandma-I-Love-You’ she will be telling YOU that she loves YOU.” ⠀⠀ She met my logic with a sly wink and a slight smile. She knew. ⠀⠀ My mama had learned to initiate her heart’s desires—to freely and shamelessly Love and claim Love. ⠀⠀ I continue to learn from her every blessed day. #mymama
For me, Arise Music Festival is synonymous with the beloved people who made the magic—the presenters who rocked the ranch (add your tag) and the creative visionaries whose dreams and hard work made it happen year after year: 🙏🏼 Paul Bassis, @tierroband @alysiaseren @ahvalenay ... ...and what about that incomparable backdrop/playground: @sunriseranch100 =sacred ground. Right about now (for the past five years!) I would be starting to envision the ARISE yoga scene—to connect with my favorite yoga teachers—to consider what I might offer this intentional community of wisdom & heart. I will miss those specific ARISE vibes in 2020...but I’m stoked to see what my friends at @instigateentertainment create next. Watch out for their future incarnations of awesome...I’ll meet you there! ONE 💗 |✌🏼| 📷@seanfboggs
