People warn you that teenagers are the worst. You know when you are pregnant and people tell you horror stories about birth? Well, you get it again when you have teens (especially girls, which is particularly unfair). I have to humbly disagree. I think that teens are amazing and fun and some of the most creative and inspiring people to be around. The chaos is different, and the challenges are still there, but it’s also such a rewarding era of parenting. Happy 15th William.
I married into the Coast Guard and it has become a huge part of my life. I’ve never seen a group of people do more for others without thinking of self. Not just lifesaving missions or hurricane relief or search and rescue, but the every day way they take care of one another. I have always been grateful that if I couldn’t live near my own family that the CG has given me another family to be a part of. We are facing Day 22 of a government shutdown which means they have been working without pay for three weeks. Our commandant managed to move funds so we could be paid on the 1st, but the 15th will come without any members being paid. For now, this isn’t going be a strain for us personally, but it is for many other service members who don’t make enough as it is. We will get backpay, but that doesn’t help today. Mortgages still need to be paid, groceries, child care (so they can still go to work because they don’t have a choice to stay home during this), the cost of having a life. Aside from the logistical and financial effects, the one that seems to bother me the most today is that my husband will wake up in the middle of the night, in a hurricane, and get in an airplane and look for you. He will sacrifice himself for you. And he will be honored to do so. It doesn’t matter who you vote for, where you come from, your skin color, who you love, or where you go to church. If you need help, he will help you. And so will all the others. This shutdown has trickle down effects that are long-lasting. The people that represent us on either side aren’t doing a good enough job to reopen our country. From where I sit, it makes me feel like our sacrifice means nothing to the people that sit in the Oval Office, the Senate floor, and the House. We should expect more of the people that represent us. And if you want to help, I’d suggest reaching out to a local CG base and seeing if you could drop off some gift cards, diapers, pet food, ask what they need. If you have a Coastie neighbor, maybe bring them a pizza and a beer. It’s been a really stressful three weeks.
I’m doing an Instagram takeover at @pinholepress today. Highlights from our magical trip to Morocco. Go check it out and give them some ❤️. So. Many. 🐪!
Happy 2019 from the Hester family. 2019 is going to be bananas for us, but we’re ready for it. Thank you so much for following along with us. Every like, comment, DM, and good thought has been appreciated. #happy2019
It feels like this was taken six months ago, but the reality is it was just a little over a week. We slept under the stars in the middle of the desert. It was so quiet and peaceful and I haven’t seen stars like this in probably ever. It was so clear that even I could pick out the constellations. Wes is so good at seeing them. When he was on the ship (he was on a 378 before he became a pilot) they had to use celestial navigation to get from Spain to Florida. No instruments, just a sextant and an almanac. I love this picture so much. I will always remember this special night and long exposures are really fun. #longexposure #fujixh1 #morocco #moroccotravel #glamping #traveltheworld #familytravel #takeyourkidseverywhere #goeverywhere #exploretheworld #hello_worldpics #thediscoverer #awanderfulchildhood #picoftheday #schooloftravel #theglobalwanderer #photooftheday #photographylover #adventurealways #ourplanetdaily #adventure #stayandwander #astrophotography #letsgetlosttogether
