Last June, Head of School, Dr. Jennifer Price, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Global Education Officer, Leila Bailey-Stewart marched with BB&N in the Pride Parade. This June the events are virtual but perhaps even more important because of their intersectionality with the Black Lives Matter movement. . “It seems only fitting during this time of another equality movement, Black Lives Matter, that messaging reflects a nod to the history of Pride—an uprising against police brutality by the queer community,” said GLAAD in a statement. “This Pride Month, we’ll be centering and lifting up the voices of Black LGBTQ people. There can be no Pride if it is not intersectional. We are Together in Pride.”
Today we celebrate Juneteeth. Did you know that it took 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation for the enslaved people in Texas to learn that slavery was abolished? . Juneteenth is one of the oldest commemorations of the ending of slavery. Often called the true Independence Day, Emancipation Day, or Freedom Day, Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement. While Juneteeth isn't yet an official national holiday, many states recognize it as a holiday, and there is continued momentum growing across the entire country. . Today, in honor of Juneteeth, we would like to challenge our followers to support Black communities by purchasing and reading two books by Black authors. For suggestions of books, and to learn more about Juneteenth, please visit the BB&N DEIG Learning Hub. Link in bio.
