NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK || We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. . Thank you to the volunteers in sport and rec who give us all the opportunity to have fun and be active. Don't forget to take some time this week to thank a volunteer - community sport and recreation wouldn't exist without them. 🏑🏀🏸 . #nvw2019 #whiriatetangata

Shout out to this local athlete. Sarah Stratton was recently selected for one of our BayTrust Athlete Scholarships which has helped her continue to represent NZ in volleyball. 🏐 In July she’s off to California with the NZ U19 Beach Volleyball team. 🇺🇸 Sarah has also been selected for the Junior Women’s Indoor Volleyball team which will attend the US High Performance Championships in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, also in July. Local talent rockin’ it on the world stage. 💪 Well done to all scholarship recipients in the first 2019 round.👏 #SportBOP
Today marked 10 years of the Rotorua Mini Marathon and it was amazing to see the more than 2700 local kids take to the course! 🏃♂️🏃♀️ This is one of our favourite events on the school sport calendar and great fun for local students. Thanks to everyone who took part, including the whanau who came down to cheer on these little legends 😀 #SportBOP . . . 🎵 www.bensound.com
Shout out to this woman - Veerle ten Have - an RS:X windsurfer and one of our BayTrust Athlete Scholarship recipients. In mid-March Veerle took on the challenge of competing in the NZ Windfoil Nationals ... despite having foiled only seven times before. She entered the Silver Fleet, won the women's division and ended up second overall. 🏅 A great example of adapting skills and fearlessly taking on new challenges. 👏 Veerle is now competing in RS:X windsurfing overseas and has her eyes on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Bay of Plenty is cheering you on, Veerle! . #Repost and 📸 @veerle.th ・・・ 2 Weekends ago I competed in the NZ Windoilf Nationals together with 40 other windfoilers from around the World. (Dutch, French, Spanish and Aussies) I can pretty confidently say I'm a reasonably experienced racer, I know how to make my way around a course and handle an RS:X Sail in up to 30 Knots. This is not the case for foiling!! Having foiled maybe 7 times before the Nationals I decided it was best to go into the Silver fleet (where we still had 25 boards on the start line) Unfortunately, the wind didn't show up as we'd hoped but we got at least one good day of racing in. I can now also say I can Semi Confidently race a windfoiler. (still learning to foil gybe though!!) I ended up 2nd Overall in Silverfleet and won the women's division, now holding 3 National Titles which is pretty exciting. (And thanks to Tim Wood & Marilyn Auton Wood from GA for helping with all sorts from transport to gear to puppies! the best) On Sunday I fly out to Palma de Majorca for my first international RS:X event of 2019, the Europans. If you're interested in reading more about what the future holds and my adventures have a read of this awesome article by Suzanne Mcfadden https://www.newsroom.co.nz/@lockerroom/2019/03/26/500891/windsurfings-next-rock-star-sailing-into-view (( LINK IN BIO )) I'm super Excited for the 2019 season and without the help of the following people I wouldn't be here so thanks Guys!
