This incredible 6.3m (20 foot) long drawing of Mametz Wood by artist @richard_william_rochester depicts Mametz Wood near the River Somme in northern France. In July 1916 Mametz Wood was the scene of a fierce battle between British and German forces. Over a period of 5 days of intense close quarter fighting, the Welsh Division suffered nearly 4000 casualties, and amongst those wounded in the battle was the artist, writer and soldier, David Jones (1895-1974). When Richard was asked to produce a piece of artwork to accompany a WW1 related touring performance called 'Journey Through Conflict - From Then Until Now', he found himself heading for France and, exactly 102 years after David Jones had fought his way into the wood, he stood there and contemplated what had taken place there. The resulting artwork depicted exactly what he saw - ‘just an ordinary wood in France’ but to see the work gives a sense of what it felt like to be in that space ‘with its ghosts and echoes of the battle’. Before leaving Mametz, Richard gathered some branches from the wood and some earth from the area of a German trench. When he returned to his studio he used the earth to make pigment for painting and the branches to make charcoal for drawing. The entire artwork is produced from these elements. A fitting tribute to all those who died, and a chilling reminder that we must not forget, and do what we can to support Peace.
Today Yodomo visited @juliaartstudio in North London - an artist specialising in willow, living willow and mixed media. This photo is a mixed media ceramics + willow piece in her studio (see our Story for more work). For those in London her work is showing at @ofspecialinterestinteriors on Park Road, N8 until mid-November. More from Julia soon on Yodomo as we bring her to the fold in order to start sharing her skills and techniques with our community 💛 (thanks @makemorefest for the intro)
Today Yodomo visited the talented maker @deborahschneebelimorrell in her home in North London. A prolific practitioner, she has written over 30 books about making and her house, as you can imagine, is full of amazing handmade works. Working with a grant from @craftscouncil in the 80s, Deborah specialised in these incredible papier-mâché scenes - so rich in colour and depth. But this is just one thing - there were hand-carved wooden dolls, wooden spoons, wooden flowers, rag rugs, paper cuts and so much more... hope very much to bring her skills and techniques to Yodomo soon 💛
Lovely trip to @cockpitarts in Deptford yesterday to visit @whelansweaving studio which is beautiful. It was great to discuss the learning process, and consider how to get people started in a new craft when the set up or equipment can sometimes act as a barrier. These long yarn wraps are normally for helping to work out colour combinations for weaves, but are also sold individually at events such as Cockpit Arts Open Studios - next ones coming up are 23 - 25 Nov (Holborn) and 30 Nov - 2 Dec (Deptford) - more on the Cockpit Arts site. Claire from Whelan’s Weaving was awarded the @weavers.cockpitarts foundation award last year and also teaches @thecassart - more from Claire on Yodomo soon as we really love her work.
Look carefully 👀 and you’ll see this image is moving. Yes it IS moving. We’ve been playing around with some new photography applications today and this one just perfectly shows off the naturally graded nature of this pink glaze... 💕 This lovely bowl from @studioranj is available for sale with other works from London studio potters at Pictures & Light in Stoke Newington.
