Hugging a friend. Meeting in a conference room. Sitting in an audience and escaping to another world. All things we should promise ourselves never to take for granted again. But for now, we must all be in this together by making sure we stay apart. Stephen Sondheim, who turns 90 next week, said it best: “No one is alone. Truly.” We love our Broadway community, and we can’t wait to hug, meet, and escape with you all again very soon!
We’re kicking off our She Makes the Music series with Kristy Norter, the music coordinator for @sixbroadway and a saxophonist with a knockout solo in @tinabroadway. Kristy has spent the past 20 years in the NYC music scene, playing everything from alto sax to bass clarinet to piccolo, and she’s the only female music coordinator on Broadway. • The most important lesson she’s learned so far? “Do good work and be a good neighbor.” Kristy clearly follows her own advice because every few minutes, we had to pause our interview as a producer, actor, or fellow musician stopped by to give her a quick hug or pat on the back. • Thanks to Kristy for taking the time to chat with us and give us a peek into her world. To learn more about her, search for her name in the directory on the @maestramusicorg site.
In celebration of #internationalwomensday, we’re excited to announce the launch of a new series of profiles created in partnership with @maestramusicorg. In the coming weeks, we’ll be showcasing some of the women who make the music in the musical theater industry. Watch this space to meet the maestras! #iwd2020
We loved hosting PS 212’s first grade class this week! These students participate in a yearlong program in which they develop all aspects of a new musical, from writing and designing to producing and performing. We did a little Advertising 101, went on a tour, and finished things off with five students presenting key art concepts for their show, “The Little Prince of Camelot.” Coming to the PS 212 stage this June!
A peek into the #SpotProcess: Thank you to @andysenorjr and Prediction Productions for giving us the chance to revisit our roots! Their documentary #RevolutionRent, which will play at the Miami Film Festival next week, explores themes of politics, family, love, and art. We used Andy’s own photos to evoke the spirit of the film and the handmade aesthetic of the musical that started it all. For more info on the film, visit the @miamifilm website.
