Today is World Refugee Day! For the last few weeks we have been sharing statistics to raise awareness for the refugee crisis. Today, we ask you to join us in doing something tangible to help refugees, locally and globally! • First, come to today’s event at makerspace, to help support our lead maker, Nadia, raise funds to go visit her family in Iraq. We are open until 7, and 15% of all sales go directly to Nadia. • Write to your representatives! We have postcards at our makerspace, but if you can’t stop by today, take time to write or call your representatives and let them know that you want reform for refugees. • Purchase from refugee-owned businesses. Today, 15% of all of our sales go directly to Nadia, and with every Welcome T you purchase you will get a free “Spread Welcome” postcard! • Check out our latest blog post about refugee rights, and the story of one of our employees, Sylvia.
We are all human, all seeking the same things - safety, home, community, belonging. • Nadia, our lead maker, and Katie, the artist who leads our creative gathering, connecting after realizing that they are both fine arts majors. An important reminder that we are all the same.
Today, there are over 11 million displaced Syrians. Of that number, 5.6 million have fled the seven year-long conflict in their home country and are facing life as refugees. 6.1 million are internally displaced. Half of those affected by this war are children. • In 2016, the US accepted 15,479 Syrian refugees. In 2017, we accepted 3,024. As of April, we have accepted only 11. • Last year, in the same 3 month period, the US accepted 790. This year, only 11. 11 million displaced people, and we have allowed only 11 of them safety and a home.
On World Refugee Day do something tangible to stand #WithRefugees! • Our resident maker, Nadia, is working hard to raise funds in order to go visit her mother and family in Iraq. Come snag her beautiful hand-crafted pottery, learn more about the refugee experience, and take the opportunity to advocate on behalf of your refugee neighbors. We will be writing postcards to our leaders and representatives. • Join us in our makerspace on Wednesday, June 20 from 9am-7pm. Invite your friends and neighbors, and bring your kids along because we'll have fun activities for them too!
Words from Rwandan refugee and author, Clemantine Wamariya. Let’s show refugees they are wanted, valued, and loved. Keep Spreading Welcome.
We think dads are pretty great, and we are so thankful for them. Happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful dads who work hard and love well, each and every day!
Important words from our very own Shadia, a woman who has been such a blessing to Treetops!
