Meet the team: Hello! I’m Karen – I’m the Project Officer at the SU. I’m missing seeing everyone on campus and drinking coffee in cafes. However I have really enjoyed running and walking around where I live more and seeing the incredible landscape every day. I’m so grateful for the tidal pool at the local beach which means my kids have had another option of exercise other than walking, even if that does mean they get freezing cold in about ten minutes. The rabbit has also enjoyed being taken out more too! I unashamedly love TV and nothing makes me happier than plonking myself on the sofa at the end of the day and switching the box on – I’ve been loving Gogglebox, Normal People, Breaking Bad (again) and the final season of Homeland – any good TV shows you’ve been watching??
Meet the team: Hey, I’m Hannah, more commonly known as Hannah P or HP in the office. I work in the Student Voice team with a particular focus on the Exeter side of representation. I’m finding lots of things to be grateful for during this crazy time. I’m happy I can keep working from home, and keep in touch with all the amazing students I work with. I’m happy that it’s given me more time with my children, though less happy at having to revisit some very rusty maths knowledge! My dog, Midge, is also really pleased that we’re all at home lots more, and she’s a great companion. I’m reading more, and getting inventive with cooking as we’re trying not to go shopping very much (kids love that ha ha). I’ve also picked up on my fitness; helpfully my son is studying sports coaching and he’s a great PT! I do miss not seeing my sister but hurrah for facetime which is better than nothing! All in all, I feel so lucky to live in Falmouth and be able to find great comfort and pleasure in very simple things such as taking in a cracking view across the headland, listening to birdsong on a warm evening, or having a quick paddle. I’ve always believed if you can find happiness in the small things then that will allow you to also find contentment and be at peace. That said, I really, really can’t wait to get a haircut!!!
May the one who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, bless and heal those who are ill. May the Blessed Holy One be filled with compassion for their health to be restored and their strength to be revived. May God swiftly send them a complete renewal of body and spirit, and let us say, Amen. Mi Shebeirach, Jewish prayer for healing #isolationnotisolated #ThoughtfulThursday
“In this time of great fear, it is important that we think of the long-term challenges—and possibilities—of the entire globe. Photographs of our world from space clearly show that there are no real boundaries on our blue planet. Therefore, all of us must take care of it and work to prevent climate change and other destructive forces. This pandemic serves as a warning that only by coming together with a coordinated, global response will we meet the unprecedented magnitude of the challenges we face.” @dalailama #ThoughtfulThursday #isolationnotisolated
Tonight before falling asleep think about when we will return to the street. When we hug again, when all the shopping together will seem like a party. Let’s think about when the coffees will return to the bar, the small talk, the photos close to each other. We think about when it will be all a memory but normalcy will seem an unexpected and beautiful gift. We will love everything that has so far seemed futile to us. Every second will be precious. Swims at the sea, the sun until late, sunsets, toasts, laughter. We will go back to laughing together. Strength and courage. See you soon! @franciscus #isolationnotisolated #ThoughtfulThursday
“...in these difficult days we must remember to look after ourselves and each other as brothers and sisters in humanity. Allah The Almighty obliges us to protect and care for ourselves and one another… Let’s also remember our elders and those most vulnerable… we urge everyone to choose mercy, wisdom and generosity instead of fear, suspicion and panic.” Imam Ali Tos, Cambridge Central Mosque #ThoughtfulThursday #isolationnotisolated
May we who are merely inconvenienced Remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors Remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home Remember those whose who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close Remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips Remember those who have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market Remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for quarantine at home Remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country Let us choose love. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, Let us find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbours. Amen. For today's Workout Wednesday we want to join you for a walk. When you head out for today's daily recommended exercise, snap a pic and tag us. Our Comms Coordinator is quite partial to a walk on the beach and has spotted two starfish in the last week 💙🌊 #VitaminSea
For fun Friday Callie built a fort, is lockdown getting to anybody else?
Allie is taking over our Stories at 4pm for Workout Wednesday. Who's joining us for some live yoga? #IsolationNotIsolated
Today was Sarah Redman's last day! 😢 To say she's been a Legend would be a huge understatement - especially as she earned legendary status as the first recipient of our Overall Contribution to SU Activities Award! She had countless extracurricular roles as a student, including Editor of The Falmouth Anchor and Project Manager of Voices, and she's led on significant change in her two years as President Student Experience. From supporting sports clubs and societies, launching sustainability initiatives, and still finding time to work with the National Student Fundraising Association, she's been nothing short of spectacular. Sunderland Students' Union is incredibly lucky to have her! ❤️ Check out for her final update on our Stories 👍
If you're not self-isolating, try and get out for a walk every day, especially while the sun is shining 🌞 Just be sure to keep the required 2m from anyone else to stay safe 👍
Allie, your President Welfare, is all set up to work from home and she'd like to offer out virtual catch ups for anyone who is self-isolating or just feeling a little lonely! You can talk about uni stuff or just have a natter! To book in a time, email firstname.lastname@example.org. #isolationnotisolated
Congratulations to @falsurf for doing really well at their varsity over the weekend!!
