I have a little confession to make... I LOVE the business side of photography! I went to school for business, I have my MBA, Excel spreadsheet are my JAM. There has been some tax chatter lately about second shooters + assistants and whether or not they can be classified as an independent contractor anymore. From what I understand, unless someone can prove that they are running a legitimate business of their own by providing a current Certificate of Insurance (COI), they will need to be treated as an EMPLOYEE moving forward. This is bad news for photographers. This means anytime you hire a second shooter or assistant, you need to ask them to provide proof of their legal business status with a current COI to remove the liability from you! If they can't provide that, you legally need to treat them as an employee. That means you need to run them through payroll, take care of payroll taxes for them, and issue them a W2 (instead of a 1099) at the end of the year... this is going to be a costly change for business owners. And anyone who is being issued a 1099 at the end of the year and is using their personal SSN instead of a federal EIN will be susceptible to an audit, since it's a huge red flag for the IRS and local government. So go get your free federal EIN ASAP and use it for everything tax related 🙌 I am passionate about this industry. I am passionate about educating others. If you are operating a photography business without business insurance, get on it before the start of 2020!! The government is cracking down and you don't want to get caught having to pay thousands in back taxes!

I often hear that the reason some couples do not want to do a First Look is because they don't want to give up that moment when the groom sees his bride walking down the aisle for the first time. After shooting nearly 300 weddings, I can say with 100% certainty that doing a First Look WILL NOT take away that moment!! They are two drastically different moments, each special in it's own way. 💕 The First Look is private. It's just the bride, groom, and photographers/videographers. It's candid, it's emotional, it's a moment reserved just for the two of them. And, logistically, it allows us to take 50% more photos because we are able to shoot all of the formal photos BEFORE the ceremony with no time constraints... and it allows the bride + groom to fully enjoy cocktail hour with their family and friends.⠀ ⠀ The aisle reveal is different. It's a moment that can never be overshadowed by a First Look. No matter what, it's a moment shared with EVERYONE at the wedding... bride, groom, parents, guests. Everyone is watching and it's such an emotional moment - to see the bride walking down the aisle on the arm of someone she loves very much toward her groom. This moment is made even better by the First Look!! Why? Because the groom can focus on enjoying this moment. On feeling this moment. He's already told his bride that she looks beautiful. He's already hugged her and kissed her. He's already hugged his parents, her parents... all that is left is to simply ENJOY this moment.⠀ ⠀ I'll be 100% honest... I get WAY better reaction shots when my couples opt for a First Look than when they don't. And if you're super lucky, like my beautiful bride Caitlin, your groom will cry at both the First Look AND the ceremony

It's my favorite day of the year... THANKSGIVING!! I've made it a habit to practice gratitude in my life on a daily basis, but I absolutely love Thanksgiving because it brings families + friends together. I am thankful for so many things this year - but, above all, I am so thankful to my clients! They chose me out of a sea of THOUSANDS of wedding photographers, to join them on such an important day in their lives, and document it all for them through my lens. Like, this is my JOB, you guys! 😍 PINCH ME!! Thank you, thank you to all of my #dcwbrides for allowing me to live my dream and serve you guys in such a beautiful way. I hope you all enjoy a fun-filled day of family, friends, football, and food. Cheers! 🥂

Katelyn + JD's #kiawahwedding was my last one of the year and Mother Nature sure wanted to us to go out with a bang. Freezing temperatures, constant rain, and gale force winds gave us a run for our money... but Katelyn + JD took it all in stride
