  • “The first time I made a modern heirloom memory quilt, it was from my son’s baby clothes. I will never forget the first cut of my shears into the tiny onesie. Instead of “measure twice, cut once,” it was more like “measure twenty times, hold your breath, cut, and hope for the best!”

It gets easier with each piece of clothing—and it’s almost always easier with someone else’s clothing. I’ve also come to believe that even a “wrong” cut can be turned into a “right” cut. If things don’t go according to plan, you will figure it out. Sometimes you end up with something even better than you imagined.” - @the_milliner, excerpted from her book, Modern Memory Quilts

  • Well, that wraps it up for our takeover of the C&T Publishing Instagram account. Thank you so much for joining us on this three-day look into our new book Boro & Sashiko – Harmonious Imperfection. There are other projects in the book including another garment, some home décor pieces, and a kit roll you are going to have to have for your own. But, for now, we leave you with some behind the scenes shots of our process. Jason spends so much time behind the camera, Shannon takes every opportunity to catch him in his creative groove. Here, in the first two photos, Jason is cutting out the pieces to one of the projects we showed in an earlier post. Can you tell which one it is? Comment below if you recognize the fabric. The last photo is Jason drawing out the abstract lotus flower moyouzashi pattern we created for our modern quilt interpretation of a large boro textile.

From concept to research to our implementation of the techniques of boro and sashiko in such a way as to honor the Japanese people who created the original textiles, this book has been a journey for us. We not only found a deep connection to the original people who made the textiles we studied, but we found a renewed connection to our own ancestors who mended and patched their own garments and accessories. We hope you enjoy our book as much as we enjoyed creating it. We ain’t done yet! There is more to come in the future through books and workshops. The more we learn, the more we will create and pass on to you. Thank you again for joining us… until next time… STITCH ON!! – S&J

Psstt… you can preorder our book from C&T Publishing or from our website. Just sayin’… - @shibaguyz
