  • Today we commemorate #Juneteenth, an annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. The long road to freedom for black Americans came on June 19, 1865 when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led Union troops to Texas and announced that the Civil War was over and all slaves had been freed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. We honor the Americans who paved the road to freedom, many with their lives, and acknowledge the countless roles and contributions that African Americans have given to our country.
