  • The first unofficial UK Black Pride was an unexpectedly popular seaside trip in 2005 The annual celebration of UK Black Pride began back in 2005, when Phyll Opoku-Gyimah helped to organise a seaside trip to Southend-on-Sea with a group of queer black women. What was meant to be a small social gathering actually turned out to be three coaches full of black lesbian and bisexual women, unofficially forming the first ever UK Black Pride. The following year, in August of 2006, UK Black Pride was launched, inviting black LGBT+ people from across Europe and the world to celebrate their identities and communities. Every year this celebration has grown larger, now being sponsored by organisations like Stonewall and Diva, and attracting the support of MPs and other public figures. UK Black Pride is now held in the centre of London, with dozens of performers and artists taking part, and over 6,000 people attending each year. #ucasulgbtqhm

Her coming out caused a lot of controversy at the time, as she left a husband to begin dating Barbara Todd, publisher of queer magazine Sappho. Maureen was de-selected by the Labour Party as a result of her coming out, with local party chairman Norman Ashby claiming she had been elected “as a working wife and mother” and that her being a lesbian had “blackened her image irredeemably”. In 1978 she won an appeal to be reinstated, but lost her election in 1979 to a Conservative candidate, most likely due to the unpopularity of her political views. Maureen had dedicated her career to fighting for gender equality and sex workers’ rights, which had put her even further out of favour with centrist and right-wing voters. Maureen is now 90 years old and has remained involved in politics for most of her life. #ucasulgbtqhm
