  • The parade is set to begin in just about 30 minutes and we are LOVING all the excitement we’re seeing! And of course all the red, white, and blue. Remember, the town will shut down around 8:45 as a safety precaution for both the participants and those of you here to cheer them on! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ #visityorktown #independenceday #julyfourth #yorktownbeach #riverwalklanding #redwhiteandblue #america

  • With mild temperatures (80 is better than 90, if you ask us!) forecasted for the Fourth of July, it’ll be a great day to take advantage of all there is to do outdoors in Yorktown. Pop over to @patriot.segway_yorktown where you can rent a bicycle and enjoy a leisurely ride down the Riverwalk, around the Yorktown Battlefield, or even up the Colonial Parkway. If you prefer exploring by water, rent a kayak or paddleboard for some fun on the York River. You could also book a guided Segway Tour for an Independence Day history lesson! Visit patriottoursva.com or call 757.969.5400 to book today.

  • One of the many fun ways to celebrate the 245th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is a trip to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown! At their Liberty Celebration this July Fourth, you can enjoy interpretive programs, artillery demonstrations (11 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.), and learn about the challenges that faced our nation’s founders, as well as those for whom the new nation’s rights of freedom and liberty did not yet apply.

Here are just some of the exciting things planned for the day:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ See a rare July 1776 broadside of the Declaration of Independence duplicated in mass to spread the word of liberty from town to town, currently showcased in an immersive gallery exhibit surrounded by signatures of this historic document's signers.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Catch Liberty Fever - the museum's introductory film, shown throughout the day in the main theater.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Take part in patriotic programming in outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Enjoy patriotic performances by The Fifes and Drums of York Town at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Join in the Great American 4th of July Sing-along led by the Cigar Box String Band, playing songs from American history that everyone knows by heart at 12, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Share your thoughts on liberty by adding them to the Liberty Tree, an interactive feature on a 17-foot sculptural tree, rooted in the museum galleries.

Indoor gallery exhibits and films are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with living-history areas open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • What's more American than a hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July? πŸŒπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ A hot dog contest, on the Fourth of July, in YORKTOWN -- duh! You'll have five minutes to see how many dogs you can down during an epic battle of appetite and will power.

This is the week to sign up to participate in the 2021 event! Just call 757.988.1999. If there are still spots left the day of the event, you can also register on site. You have to be at least 18 and you do have to sign a waiver.

This community tradition is sponsored by Carrot Tree's Glenn Helseth who also owns Toby's Dog House in Williamsburg. It's a great way to pass the time if you're hanging out at Yorktown Beach on Independence Day. The fun kicks off on the Riverwalk Landing concert stage starting at 1 p.m.

So what do you get if you win? 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 π“πŽππ˜'𝐒 π‡πŽπ“ πƒπŽπ†π’ π…πŽπ‘ 𝐀 π–π‡πŽπ‹π„ π˜π„π€π‘ for you and three guests! You'll also receive a $25 gift certificate to Carrot Tree Kitchens Yorktown. Second place is a Toby's t-shirt and a dog toy from our newest baller business, Gangsta Dog - Great stuff for really good dogs.

The big question is whether this year's winner will top Jumpin' Jimmy who devoured nine hot dogs in five minutes back in the summer of 2019.

In 2018, it was Barbara Davis who took home the prize after her sons convinced her to enter. She downed six dogs in the allotted time!

  • You should be able to see the Fourth of July fireworks anywhere at the waterfront or up on Main Street at the Victory Monument. The show starts at 9:15 p.m. and lasts about 15-18 minutes.

Some of the fireworks will shoot up to 800 feet into the sky. Just to put that in perspective a littleβ€”the Washington Monument in D.C. is 555 feet tall!

The Yorktown Battlefield, located at the corner of Cook Road and Ballard Street, will be the central parking location for the evening activities and fireworks.

The Battlefield will open to the public at 4 p.m. and will close once it reaches capacity. We can't emphasize it enough; get there early!

(Here are some of our favorite pictures shots by York County staff members or shared with us by visitors on social media. We hope you'll tag us in your photos and videos again this year!)
