Emily here, reposting from my new @emilyonlife account for personal writing: The internet loves to implore us to turn our passions into our careers. Which, in general, is a totally fine idea. But there’s a weird thing I’ve noticed: more and more, it feels almost like a cultural expectation that if you love to do something, your next step is OBVIOUSLY to figure out how to monetize it. Like doing something just for the love of doing it is no longer enough. And I think this is dangerous, because what the memes don’t talk about is what happens when your motivation shifts from doing something for love, to doing it for love and also money. Your relationship with the thing you love changes when you do it for money, especially if what you love most about it comes mainly from the process of doing it (vs. a sense of purpose). Most frequently, it becomes a lot less fun, because it now has a ton of extra layers and expectations and responsibilities around it. The lightness of joy gets heavier. Sometimes it’s worth paying that price in order to do this thing you love for a career— but sometimes it’s not. And both choices are totally valid. #emilyonlife #dowhatyoulove
