The Bijou Film Board stands with and supports the Black community in the fight against racial injustices and systemic racism. Bijou aims and will continue to aim to promote inclusivity within our organization through our membership, programming, and attendees as we acknowledge the deeply-rooted presence of Black creators and culture within the film industry. We are committed to amplifying and supporting the voices of Othered communities at large, including those of Black filmmakers who are crucial agents in invoking change and empathy through powerful means of storytelling. It is imperative that we do not end the conversation here and instead continue to practice inclusivity and safety of Black individuals inside and outside of our community. Oscar Micheaux showed us with Within Our Gates, Haile Gerima and other filmmakers of The LA Rebellion showed us, Spike Lee showed us with Do the Right Thing. But this is not a movie. Cinema is a powerful tool for change, but only if we as cinephiles continue the conversation - and active effort - outside of the theaters. Because this is not a movie. Bijou Film Board stands with the Black community in the fight for justice and equality. The Bijou’s mission to engage, entertain and educate the community with alternatives to mainstream cinema remains; But this is not a movie. This is happening in front of us in real time. We cannot press pause on this. And we WILL NOT look the other way. On and off the screen, Now and forever, Black Lives Matter. We encourage you to visit FREE THE WORK’s website that contains an extensive list of underrepresented creators, educational organizations and services, film distributions and showcases, databases, and more.
