Yellow dock pulls iron from the earth. This plant is past harvesting, but you can clearly see the dry flower heads, the colour of rust. This common weed is full of minerals and can be tinctured to make a superb bitter herbal digestif. . . . . #medicinemaker #bitters #botanicalpickmeup #forager #coastalplants #makeityourself #herbalist #freelancenaturopath #artisanproducts #naturesmedicine #plantmedicine #tonics #oldways
Some people say the definition of a weed is a plant which is of no use to man. I disagree. This beautiful example is borage or starflower. You can often spot it growing on rubbish dumps but I have cultivated this one in a pot. It has so many uses, but unfortunately it's one of the growing number of plants herbalists are no longer allowed to prescribe due to a controversy over pyrrolizide alkaloids (a reason often quoted by zealots who are also trying their hardest to take St. John's Wort off our list.) It's a shame because used wisely it can support the adrenal glands, putting reserves in the tanks of folk with adrenal fatigue. It's also traditionally used to lift the mood and cheer the heart. As the old saying goes Borage brings courage. Hence the reason Roman soldiers used to add it to their wine. The flowers are edible and look so pretty in salads. I'm rather partial to freezing them in ice cubes and adding to Pimm's. . . #botanicalpickmeup #wildfood #askaherbalist #freelancenaturopath #weeds #inthegreen #simplepleasures #lookaround #florafix #natureinspiration #summersalads #naturetherapy #gardening #outdoorsy #countryliving #lovecornwall #newquay
Don't you just love a new notebook? I'm brimming with ideas for blog posts right now and feel a writing fest coming on! Any excuse to purchase new stationery! In this digital age I still find I prefer to make hand written notes. There's something about using pen and paper that allows my creative juices to flow. Its also much nicer to take outdoors, using a phone to take plant notes just doesn't feel the same! I have a pile of notebooks filled with recipes and musings going back years. Do you have a notebook? What do you use yours for? . . #notebooks #plantjournal #spoons #iamwriting #freelancenaturopath #musingsoftheday #diarist #creativeprocess #herbalist #naturenotes
How many of these wild flowers can you recognise? Being fortunate enough to attend a primary school that was obsessed with nature tables (bring them back!) and a grandfather who loved Botany, I can't help but have a spring in my step when I see the lanes burst into life at this time of year. These beauties were picked on my little mooch about today. I think they make a much prettier decoration than any shop bought flowers.
How cool was our flower remedies workshop today! The sun had his hat on long enough for us to create a wonderful hawthorn remedy which we all poured our shiny energies into. Special thanks to the magical @clairejayne75 for taking these fab shots, and of course to @sprouthealthfoods for adding the vibes and as always, hosting a fabulous event. Thank you to everyone that came for making my bank holiday one to remember. Check out the #tablecloth 🙌 Happy remedy making! 🌻
