Recently finished rereading 1984. So many impressive things about the novel but, for me, it’s the thoroughness of the world Orwell creates that astounds. Some theorize that the world is likely based off of his observations of the Cold War but he teases out this inspiration so far. Winston’s experience feels intrinsically true. It’s terrifying. I’m also fascinated by Orwell’s book within the book – The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. For pages upon pages, Orwell completely switches voices. Swapping his super intimate, claustrophobic narrative into a dry “history” textbook. Pulling all the subtext into the foreground just to shove it away again to finish Winston’s story. Total mastery.
Happy Pride NYC! Do NOT behave yourself.
