I have been thinking a lot about what school is going to look like in the fall and I worry. How can we make sure students are safe and still give them what they need? We know how important it is for students to handle books—to touch, turn pages, and explore them—so make it safe for them and easy to disinfect for you by making them them indestructible! 📚 You just need a paperback book, laminator, and hole bunch or binding machine. I have step by step directions on my blog (click the link in my bio) but you can also swipe to see photos. The laminate covering each page makes it easy to wipe or spray with Lysol without damaging the books. Don’t do this to every book in your library, maybe just some classroom favorites! 📚 Tap the bookmark under the photos to save this for future reference.
I’m sorry for not using this platform to speak out against racism until now. Instead I stayed silent because I didn’t want to say “the wrong thing.” Enough with that. If I am not using this platform to speak out against racism THEN WHAT AM I EVEN DOING. Ever since moving to Mississippi my eyes have been wide open and my ears listening. Yet I still have so much more to learn. If you’re not sure where to start, start by listening, researching, and donating. Listen to: @thetututeacher @readlikearockstar @theconsciouskid @mrsrussellsroom Research: @innocenceproject (If you’re curious why I’ve included them, I’d love to chat!) @teaching_tolerance @raceforward Donate: @yourrightscamp @emmetttilllegacyfoundation @splcenter The list is in no way exhaustive, but is a great place to start. If you have people or organizations you’d recommend, please share them with me!
We had a whaley great time on Zoom! 🐳 Today I used my iPhone as a document camera so we could complete this directed draw (free from @easypeasyandfun). No app needed, just hop on to your Zoom meeting with your phone and prop your phone up on something above your desk. (I used a can of spray glue because that’s what was near.) From your computer’s Zoom app click “spotlight video” of your phone so your phone is the main video students see. Then you’ll be able to see your students from your computer and they’ll be able to see your drawing, too! Have you tried using your phone as a document camera yet? If so, what activities have you done? . . . #distancelearning #iteachviazoom #iteachonzoom #zoomteaching #iteachk #iteachfirst #iteachsecond #iteachtoo #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers
I miss my students, I miss going to school, I miss what would have been. We should be doing all sorts of fun activities these last couple weeks, but instead I’m teaching on Zoom. I mailed these postcards a few weeks ago and I think it’s time to mail another batch. I hate that the year is ending this way and I really hate to think about another school year starting this way, too. What is something you’re missing right now? #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteachk #iteachtoo #iteachfirst #iteachsecond #elementaryteacher #distancelearning
Today was a good day of distance-learning! Some days are better than others and I’m sure you feel the same. We did a directed-draw, played a few Boom games, and then I read this book. I love this book for so many reasons and reading it with the @novel_effect app made it even better! The app followed along as I read and added sound effects. We stopped and discussed how CJ’s nana was able to find the beauty when sometimes CJ couldn’t. We made some connections to how things are really tough right now for some students and families, but we can try to find SOMETHING good. How did distance-learning go for you this week? . . . . #distancelearning #noveleffectapp #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #mattdelapena #iteachk #iteachfirst #iteachsecond #iteachtoo
Doesn’t everyone teach with a container of pretend food under their desk? Today I spiced up my Zoom meeting by playing a fun game! I asked all but one student to close their eyes and I held up pretend food to the camera. Then, the student had to describe the food and get the other students to guess what it was. Super simple, fun, and got them to think about and use details and descriptive words! . . . . Tell us a distance-learning activity has been a hit with your students! . . . . . #iteachtoo #iteachk #iteachfirst #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #distancelearning #zoomteaching
