✈️ Armchair travel through our Collection// To a young serviceman in World War One, the pyramids near Cairo must have seemed truly wondrous. There are many photos from both World Wars of servicemen visiting these ancient monuments. This photo is from an album in our collection that belonged to Air Mechanic Class 2 Victor Lamb and shows the three Great Pyramids of Giza. Note the Sphinx at far right, which has not yet been fully excavated from the desert sands. Not much is known about Victor Lamb, other than he was an Englishman in the RAF and serviced aircraft engines at one of the flying training schools in Egypt. He emigrated to New Zealand after World War Two. Click the link in bio to explore our collection for more faraway places. Image credit 📷: ALB8319111047. Like everyone in New Zealand right now, we’re thrilled about the move to Alert Level 1, and the return to near normal business. Our interactive spaces, including the Mosquito Mission simulator and 'Captured' exhibition are now open for visitors to enjoy once again, but we are continuing our heightened cleaning regime, and hand sanitiser stations will still be in place around the Museum. To read more about what Level 1 looks like at the Air Force Museum, click the link in bio. #AirForceMuseumNZ #Open #MuseumVisit #AviationMuseum #ChchMustDo

Stories of service and sacrifice / / ‘P.S. Unharmed, undamaged – and full of beans. P.P.S. Probably returning to unit shortly. P.P.P.S. Items lost – aid appreciated: one watch, First aid kit, pyjamas, Hussif.’ So wrote Ned Hitchcock home to his family, five days after his landing at Omaha Beach. Ned was one of over 10,000 New Zealanders on active duty with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy during the D-Day landings at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. But serving as an electrical engineer officer in the RAF, he never expected to be part of the Allied invasion: ‘I remember thinking …. just ahead of them they’ve got this fantastic operation in which they will be launched on the French coast against enemy forces. And I dismissed that from my mind, it wasn’t in my territory at all.’ Ned was one of 28 people recruited by the RNZAF to work with the RAF on coastal radar in Britain. Armed with an Honours degree in electrical engineering from Canterbury University College, he arrived in Liverpool with the other New Zealand recruits, many of whom were amateur radio operators.
