One of my favorite summer meals is just a smear of herbed cream cheese, cucumbers, lots of salt and pepper and whatever bread we have on hand. Last week we tried it on a toasted crumpet from @aldiusa, and it was 💯💯. Still over here making food. Still stubbornly hopeful that food is a catalyst for change, a common grace, a means for healing and reconciliation. The table is an equalizer; our need for and enjoyment of food is a reminder of the common humanity we share. I desperately miss gathering at the table, but the virus can’t stop us from engaging in some baking therapy and leaving the results on a friend’s porch. ❤️ These Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins are one of my go-tos when I need a quick baking fix. They’re homey and comforting, and they travel well. Some days I protest or make phone calls or read a book. Today, I light a candle for the broken-hearted and grab a whisk. #bakingtherapy #blueberrymuffins #blacklivesmatter #bakingforchange #bakersagainstracism #foodgifts
Many are having important conversations right now about “doing the work” to educate ourselves and actively dismantle racism in ourselves and our world. Let’s be clear: work is needed, and it won’t always be pleasant. Change requires time and intention, discomfort and lament. Please also allow me to shout this from the rooftops: Working toward a just and equal world for my black brothers and sisters is a JOY and a PRIVILEGE. My life and faith are fuller and richer because of this work. It is a pleasure to learn from black leaders and friends. I’m so grateful I get to be introduced to new people, experience powerful art and literature, have meaningful conversations with my kids, be involved in the political process, reconsider my biases and our history, and discover new restaurants and offerings from black owned businesses. We work for racial justice because all humans are beloved images of God. Full stop. That’s reason enough. But a world where every voice is heard and celebrated is also a better world for all of us. The world is more interesting, creative, safe, and beautiful when every person is able to bring their free and flourishing selves to the table. We fight for a better world for our black brothers and sisters and therefore, a better world for everyone. Friends, we don’t just have to do the work, we get to do the work.
We’re having a very tender conversation in my stories about the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and about the systems in our country that continue to traumatize black communities. My heart is cracked wide open. It is not lost on me that I am raising two white boys. I’m lucky I don’t have to worry if they will be safe when they go jogging. It’s a privilege that I don’t have to prep them on what to do if they’re stopped by a cop or teach them not to shop with their hoodie up or their hands in their pockets. These boys were born into a system that will give them every advantage, every benefit of the doubt. I only pray I can raise them to be men who don’t cling to power or privilege, but instead advocate for their black brothers and sisters to enjoy the same rights, protection, and dignity they’ve been given.
Listen, if we’re going to eat raw spinach, we should at least have the decency to smother it in a sugary lemon dressing. 🤣😍 This refreshing strawberry spinach salad is on the blog and vaguely reminiscent of strawberry lemonade. In other words, it’s one of the few ways I actually enjoy eating raw spinach. 👍🏻 #strawberryseason #salad #saladrecipe #spinachsalad #easyrecipe #summerfood #freshfromthegarden
