• Bye-bye Bisttram. Another work from our “Living with Art Sale” headed out the door today...to take a short trip to a collector’s home here in the Hudson Valley. Emil Bisttram (1895-1976) was a modernist and Taos pioneer. He was a founding member in 1938 of the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG) in New Mexico. This lovely pastel from 1956 made a first time visitor to CGH very happy today. So we’re happy! #emilbisttram #transcendentalpaintinggroup #hudsonny #hudsonnyart #taosartist #newmexicoartist #shopkeeperslife #pastelart

  • Newly uncrated treasures await CGH visitors after a year-end/start hiatus to enjoy family time. We’ve brought four exceptional works into the gallery “art family” from a museum deaccession. Jay Milder’s 1963 Subway Series work now looks out at Warren Street and greets our sidewalk strollers. The artist did pioneering work in figural expressionism and was a precursor to graffiti art. Inside the gallery first floor exhibition space are three exquisite 1960 enamel on canvas pours by Stanley Twardowicz, an innovative and underrated artist if ever there was one. They join our 1957 Twardowicz and a host of other carefully curated works from our extensive inventory. Our second floor space holds our extended special Living with Art Sale. We’ll be open this Winter most Fridays-Sundays. Please stop in and say hello if you’re in #hudsonny. Our website never sleeps, so you can visit us there, too! #stanleytwardowicz #jaymilder #americanart #figuralexpressionism #graffitiarts

  • The Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters held March 13-25, 1916 at Anderson Galleries, NY was one of the watershed moments in American art history. A veritable “who’s who” of scholars, artists, dealers, and “influencers” of the time curated an exhibition and accompanying catalogue which tackled the “questions” of modern art. Along with the supernova of 1913’s Armory Show, The Forum Exhibition holds an important place in the timeline, trials and tribulations of modern art’s acceptance and ascendency in America. We are pleased to own an important Cubist work by Henry Lee McFee (1886-1953) which was exhibited in The Forum Exhibition. McFee was a pioneering Cubist painter, and founding member of the Woodstock Artist Association. After moving to Woodstock NY he began exhibiting in NYC starting in 1910 with impressionist landscapes. Just a few years later, he was immersed in Cubism. “The White Pitcher” (1915) is oil on canvas, 20” x 16”, signed and dated lower right. Inquiries regarding this exceptional example of early American modernism and Cubism are of course welcome. #modernart #theforumexhibition #earlyamericanmodernism #cubist #cubistart #1915 #henryleemcfee #modernamericanart #forumexhibitartist #americanart #hudsonny #woodstockny #woodstockartist #woodstockartistsassociationmuseum #woodstockartistcolony #woodstockartistassociation #stilllifepainting #cubiststilllife

  • When art 🖼 tells stories 📖 I find myself engaged in a dialogue and invited to muse upon and research universal themes which connect and affect us all. In the salon of our Hudson house I’m enjoying this 2018 oil on aluminum painted by @nikolinakovalenko which unifies numerous natural, environmental, and mystical themes in one work. Nika shared anecdotes from her artist residency @fishfactoryis in September 2018 where she worked on a series of paintings titled “Guardians Of Northern Lights” which processed and interpreted Icelandic sagas and legends through the visual landscape and cultural associations. This painting depicts the faceted basalt cliffs, black lava sand, sea life, and dangers, of a beautiful and foreboding place - #reynisfjarabeach . The mystical overlay is an Icelandic 🇮🇸 legend which says the large basalt cliff columns were once big trolls that tried to pull ships ashore near the island. These trolls could leave their caverns only at night. One day they came to hunt too late - and the dawn light turned them into stone. I really like the en grisaille palette and effect of the oil on aluminum panel. Art as storytelling is infinitely intriguing to this collector! #icelandicart #fishfactoryis #fishfactorycreativecentre #reynisfjara #blacklavasand #nikolinakovalenko #arttellsastory #hudsonny #artcollecting

  • Dec. 2018. Throwback (Swipe) to crowded and relentless art fair weeks. Missing the halcyon days when people, art (& cell phones) could gather and mingle in mask-less bliss. People started complaining of “fairtigue” a few years ago. I wish! 2020 is inducing “OVRtigue” (online viewing room fatigue) as we try to convince ourselves staying home and viewing art 🖼 fairs, museum shows, and gallery exhibitions online can replace the tactile and sensory experience of interacting first-hand with art...and our fellow art world aficionados. I applaud the creative efforts in our pandemic ravaged world to improve the remote art experience - just as I lament the loss (hopefully temporary) of the analogue, real time interactions with the art and people - the yin/yang elements - who make this obsession so soul satisfying. May 2021 find us crowding together safely once again with art as our glorious glue. 🤞🏻🤞🏻#throwbackthursday #artfairs #artfairseason2018 #artfairsmiami #miamiartweek #miamiartweek2018 #missingartfairs

  • Did you have a “Red Ryder” Christmas moment? I did in 1969 when under the Christmas 🎄 tree my sisters had received bountiful piles of fabulous sleigh borne wonders whilst I had received a book, a sweater, and some socks 🧦 my lovely grandmother knit. Realizing all presents were accounted for and opened, I resigned myself that Santa had heard those swear words I might or might not have uttered earlier in the year, and I had been consigned to the naughty list. Then, my dad turned to my mom and said “Didn’t we hear some sounds in the dining room last night? I wonder if Santa left anything there.” I was off like a shot from a Red Ryder BB gun to find a deluxe slot car setup the elves had spent half the night putting together. It was suddenly the greatest Christmas ever! The photo was taken with my game face on. Racing is serious business! 2020 has been such a challenging year, but I have come to appreciate more than ever before the gifts 🎁 throughout the year of loved ones, family, friends, and strangers as we all connect and try to make sense of this changed and unsettled planet. May we all find connections of depth and meaning this holiday season- and a better 2021! #abetter2021 #redrydermoment #happyholidays2020 #slotcars #vintageslotcars

  • Carolina Dreaming. Four treasures deaccessioned from a NC museum found their way to CGH in some big crates. Institutions sometimes “cull the herd”, utilizing best practices set forth by the American Alliance of Museums. I put my paddle in the air when I saw these stellar early-1960’s works, and some art elves brought them to CGH. More to come on these stellar soul stirring nuggets after the New Year. I love my job... #artmakesmehappy #hudsonny #ilovemyjob❤️

  • Every year on the winter solstice my sober self is thankful to celebrate another anniversary. “Jay 2.0” turns 26 today. One day at a time 9,498 times seems a bit surreal. But what is concrete and profoundly real is the love, support, and encouragement I’ve received along the way, and continue to receive, from friends, family, and fellow sufferers of addiction. My gratitude 🙏🏻 runs deep... #soberlife #cleanandsober #gratitude

  • Sunday morning salon moment. A large, masterful 1970’s Sally Michel (Avery) oil hangs above a T. H Robsjohn-Gibbons lounge chair, c.1830’s classical parcel-gilt and stenciled mahogany writing table with secret compartment, and Daum lamp. Coffee time is better when you live what you love. In 2020 a core theme of our business - spending time at home and hearth with loved ones surrounded by art we love - was amplified by the pandemic. Now more than ever we believe in the mystical power of art 🖼 to enhance and clarify our lives. This painting reflects this theme as it depicts Milton and Sally Avery’s artist daughter March, son-in-law, and grandson. Please let us know if we can help bring art into your life. #hudsonny #artsalon #livingwithart #artathome #sallymichel #sallymichelavery #marchavery #marchaverycavanaugh
