It's almost time for our flash fiction boot camp and so we've asked our mentors a few questions about the importance of writing and why it keeps them writing, as part of our prep! Here's what they had to say: Wayne Rée (@waynegerardree), Author Q1: What is the most important element to any work you've done so far? Wayne: Humanity. Whether I'm writing short stories, comics or even marketing copy, I try to connect with my audience on an emotional level, reaching out to them in ways that are hopefully universal. Plot, concepts or characters usually come second for me, and will all revolve around whatever it is I'm trying to say as a person. Q2: What key message does your work say about you and your body of work? Wayne: For my work as an author and comic creator, I want my readers to find their own message. I write each story with a message in mind, but whether the audience takes that particular message away from my stories isn't as important as the story speaking to them in a way that matters on an individual and personal level. Q3: What key take away should attendees watch out for in your OPEN session this coming 24-26 June? Wayne: You're not alone. You're part of a greater community of storytellers, whether seasoned professionals or aspiring newbies, who share your concerns and worries, but also celebrate your successes. Catch Wayne Rée and the rest of our mentors this 24-26 June at the SBC Training Room for 3 days of developmental workshops and pitching sessions to take your flash fiction game to the next level. It's almost time for our flash fiction boot camp and so we've asked our mentors a few questions about the importance of writing and why it keeps them writing, as part of our prep! Here's what they had to say: Joelyn Alexandra (@joelynalexandra), Storygamer Q1: What is the most important element to any work you've done so far? Joelyn: That there's a story - I'm a story-based reader, so I generally like to discover worlds and universes through the plots, actions, and behaviours of the characters involved. The same goes for my work. I'm also a planner, so I often always have a structure and an overview of key story components and milestones before I dive into a project so that the story still prevails. Q2: What key message does your work say about you and your body of work? Joelyn: Imagination can solve problems? In my case as a storyteller, I realized many stories I've put out involve questioning the status quo, but also looking at situations complexly. I do like injecting different ideas into my stories though (e.g. mass vertical farming, arcology, puzzle locks), so my stories do end up being some kind of speculative lab or discussion. Q3: What key take away should attendees watch out for in your OPEN session this coming 24-26 June? Joelyn: The beauty of being among creatives is that there is no one way of doing things, and that competitors can become collaborators or partners, so you get to understand how you create on an individual level. Also, empathy - being able to genuinely put yourself in someone else's shoes and understand their lives not only helps you relate to your audiences, but also makes you a more well-rounded storyteller. It's almost time for our flash fiction boot camp and so we've asked our mentors a few questions about the importance of writing and why it keeps them writing, as part of our prep! Here's what they had to say: Jerry Teo (@rex_regrets), Illustrator Q1: What is the most important element to any work you've done so far? Jerry: The most important aspect is to have an idea of the final product, then working backwards to set goals in steps to achieve it. Hopefully the participants will be able to pick up on this system and clear up how to implement a workable solution to clarify and calcify the concepts floating in their head. Q2: What key message does your work say about you and your body of work? Jerry: My full time work as an illustrator is very different from a content creator. Specifically for Rex Regrets I really wanted to see how silly I can go with dinosaurs, particularly a T-Rex. But on the whole, its about pushing boundaries of what seems normal. Q3: What key take away should attendees watch out for in your OPEN session this coming 24-26 June? Jerry: If there's one thing participants should learn, its to be open minded about knowledge they can use for their content. A wise aunt once told me if I want to create content that appeals to a greater audience, I must first understand how the world works. Being open minded to what you learn allows a content creator to develop content that really resonate with their audience. If you want to open minds, you have to first open the doors to your own.
